This laptop is about to go out the window!!!
I have a .reg file which stops CD/DVD auto play and every time I double
click it it opens in Notepad and prints :-( I reckon I have about a
pmj...
|
Well, having it Open in Notepad (as opposed to just Importing
straight into the Registry) on a Double Click is actually quite a good
idea?
Though, yes, it doesn't need to Print it.
Jeff Gaines...
|
No! I know what I want to do, if I want to edit it I will bring up the
context menu and select UltraEdit :-)
pmj...
|
What about Setting "Edit/Open with UltraEdit" as the Default
Action then?
:-)
I* stil lsay it's safer to have the Default Action *not* Set as
"Merge" - so long, obviously, as there is a "Merge" Action available
on the RightClick Context Menu, which you can put in, by using the
Folder Options thing.
Or you can use "OpenWith" (Shift + RightClick if needed, to get the
"OpenWith Dialog Box) & then Tick the Box:
[/] Always Open this File Type with this Application & Select
Regedit.exe (navigate to it, if it doesn't show up in the "OpenWith"
List)

Doesn't your Printer Driver have a "Preview" thingy on it?
So you can Abort the Print, if yo udon't want it?
Jeff Gaines...
|
It's attached to the printer port on the router but it doesn't pause,
just prints, a few more trees wasted :-(

million copies.
Can anybody tell me where in this abominable OS I can tell it to treat
me like an adult who knows what he is trying to do please? I just want
pmj...
|
Try:
Right>Click>Import (or Merge)
on it?
& if you want to Set (change) the Default Action, then go to:
Folder Options>File Types
Scroll down to the .REG (&/or also .KEY) File Extension - Labelled
as File Type: "Registration Entries"
Click [Advanced...]
Highlight the Action taht yo uwant as the Default (I like to have
"Edit"), then Click [Set Default]
[OK]
|
it to incorporate itself itself in the registry.
Tickettyboo...
|
yep, set the file action default for reg files to 'merge' :-)
|
Ali...
|
Right click and select Merge, which I thought was the default action - I had
to change mine to avoid doing it by mistake.
To change the default action - Folder Options > File Types > select the file
type > Edit > select required action > Set Default works for me.
Jeff Gaines...
|
Thanks for all the responses :-)
There is no merge option on the context menu, there is no option to
pmj...
|
You (or something/someone) must've been Fiddling then!!!
:-)
Cos there most definitely *is* a "Merge* Option (Set as the Default -
Bold - Action) for the .REG File Extewnsion in all Versions of windoze
since at least w95!
|
select merge in any of the menus in the file types dialog. I can type
pmj...
|
It *should* be listed in the List of "Actions", that yo uget to, when
you Select .REG & Click [Advanced...]
|
pmj...
|
Yep, yo ucan Add a "New" Action, if you want...
|
in 'merge' but it needs to know which file to open it with and I have
no idea :-( I use regsvr32.exe for DLL files, any thoughts please?
pmj...
|
regedit.exe
Type that in (remember to include the .exe, in this case, so it can
find the File without having to use the Full File Path)
Click OK.
You can also add the " %1" - Double Quote Space Percent Character Double
Quote - if yo uwant, but you don't actually need to, cos
windoze will (in my experience) Add that for you.
You can (if you want) Tick the [/] Use DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange)
Option, though that is normally needed.
If you do, then leave "DDE Message:" Blank
& Enter "Regedit" as the "Application:"
& leave "DDE Application Not Running:" Blank
& Enter "System" as the "Topic:"

Tickettyboo...
I'd like to know what has changed it, I had automatic updates on for a
pmj...
|
Wouldn't we all!?
:-)
Could be any of a number of things...

while on this machine so it may have been a security update. I need to
Tickettyboo...
|
If this is win xp, then I am fully up to date with the updates and the
file types options are just tickettyboo.
Jeff Gaines...
|
It's weird, it's not something I would change because I use .reg files
a fair bit. This machine has been pulled about a lot recently with
partitions added/removed/resized to make room for Linux, but that
shouldn't lead to file associations being changed.
I was a bit frustrated last night/early this morning :-( I was trying
to make a couple of iso files from a DVD. Nero ejected the DVD as not
being a CD (true), I pushed it back in, Nero rejected it and so on ad
infinitum. Problem was every time I pushed it back in it auto started!
pmj...

Try Holding down the SHIFT Key, when you Insert a Disk?
(& keep it held down, while the Disk Spins up & is recognised)
The SHIFT Key Toggles the AutoRun Action.
It *might* be that that causes it to reject the Disk?
But I think that things like Nero also have their own Detection
Routines, which Hook into the Operating System as well - try
Switching off/Disabling things such as "NeroCheck" in the Run Key(s)
in the Registry?
|
Anyway thanks again for the prompt help in the unsociable early hours
:-))
pmj...
|
What are those early hours for, if not for doing all sorts of
interesting things?
Ali...
|
Some people seem to think they are for sleeping. Weird.
|
:-)
|
|
|
get it working, I want to re-install and that depends on my being able
to merge several of these files!!!
pmj...
|
Well, see above.
But yo ucan also Merge them from within Regedit...
Menu>File>Import
Or Re-Write the Files as .INF Files!
:-)
So you can then use RightClick>Install on them.
But .INF Files are much more complicated & involved than .REG Files.
