Just been vaccing the landing, I wondered to myself whether it was a
Yorkshire expression.
Ponder...

No, it's not a local thing... it's like the helicopter that crashed into
the roof of a house not too far away from here a few years ago. They blamed
the householder because he left the landing light on ;)
|
It is in the dictionary :the floor area at the top of the stairs.

That's right, it is an old expression, I don't know why I found myself
saying it, I usually say top of the stairs ;-)

What is used instead? Surely "landing" comes from "land" as in what is
under our feet, and as such is not a rare word.

We would have used the word frequently in the UK ,but not here as we are in
a bungalow ;-)

Just thinking silly thoughts aloud to myself while doing the housework as
you do LOL
Does anyone else talk to themself or is it just me ?

Landing for top of the stairs and half-landing for a turn in the stairs are
in common use in Orkney

My grandmother who came from Bedfordshire would always use the word
*soodle* but you can't find it in many dictionaries.
She would quite often *soodle to the village shop*

I got up this morning and there were 2 aeroplanes at the top of the stairs.
Apparently I had left the landing light on ;-)

My granny used to tell me that joke ;-)

So, please remind me, when did they invent the airplane?
Ali...

1874, Ryedale, Yorkshire, England.
The Wright brothers re-invented it some thirty years later.

OI!!! I read a veiled insult there :-P
There were airplanes in my granny's day, they used to land at Prestwick
Aerodrome ( not airport) and the runway went over the main road.
