After an unsuccessful attempt at making one or two folders 'Private' I am
now left with the necessity of using a password to open Windows. :-(
pmj...
|
I did see your Post (in the original Thread) about that, but I haven't
(yet) had a chance to reply to it.
jamps...
|
Thanks pmj. I thought you would be sleeping. lol
|
Yes, to be able to do that "make Folders Private" thing, it *does*
require that you Log on to your windoze Account (i.e. when you Boot
the Machine up & Log in) with a PassWord!
That's so it knows that you have Logged in (& not someone else).
|
I spent several hours last night searching around trying to get rid of this
annoyance without success.
How do I do it please?
pmj...
|
There are several different ways to avoid having to Enter the PassWord,
when you Log in...
One way is to just remove the PassWord!!! [*1]
jamps...
|
Done that but it still remains!
|
Control Panel>User Accounts
Use either...
Pick a Task>Change an Account(Pick your Account)>Remove the PassWord
jamps...
Or
Select the Account>Remove PassWord
You can also just change the PassWord to a Blank PassWord (i.e. Enter
the Current PassWord, then Enter *Blank* (i.e. "nothing") as the New
PassWord (& the confirmation)
jamps...
|
I didn't type 'blank' I just left a blank space.
|
But bear in mind that if you remove the PassWord, you will then *Lose*
(Access to) any Files (& Folders) that you have PassWord Protected!
jamps...
|
Yes - I'm prepared for that.
|
windoze does Pop Up a Warning, saying that will happen, so you get
a chance to not do it & [Cancel] out.
jamps...
Another way is to Set the PC to still use your PassWord, but to
*Automatically* Log on, using That PassWord, when it Boots Up.
But that's just as bad & insecure as not having a PassWord on the
Account (see below)
jamps...
|
I prefer not to use a password.
Gareth...
|
Would a 'System Restore' put it back to how it was?
jamps...
|
Don't know Gareth. I've never used 'System Restore' so don't know what it
does. :-(
It's a case of 'Where angels fear to tread etc.'
Gareth...
|
Oh I presume that you have Win XP?
If so, it's marvellous. It puts your computer back to how it was at an
earlier time. It can also be 'undone' too if it does not cure your
problem.
It is quite self explanatory too.
Win XP takes a snapshot of your system every so often and stores it. If
you have a problem you can go to the calendar in System Restore and
select a 'restore point' that was made before you played around with
the passwords. It'll then reboot your computer and tell you that the
'restore' was successful (or not) and then you should be able to
continue as you were before you touched the passwords.

Are these of any help? I'm not going to try them first as I don't want to
be stuck with the password! LOL
or
jamps...
|
Many thanks Annie - they look very useful but I'm not sure that they will
help as it's a user password that I hoped to use for a'Privacy' folder that
is the bu**er!
I'll wait until someone else tries it cos I'm a scaredy.scaredy custard. :-)

'Emoticons' is the posh word for 'Smilies', not (just) the face images
provided by Quotefix and the Instant Messenger programs.
|
Ali...
|
Yes, I can't really see if an image the size of a single character is
smiling or frowning, but :) and :( are clear enough.
GrannieAnnie...
|
Oh, you must try it, it's brilliant. It even puts your cursor at the bottom
ready for bottom posting, that was a real bugbear.
You type in a colon and a bracket at it changes them to a smile.
It also changes each conversation to a different colour which is so much
easier to read. (You are purple, I'm blue, LOL)
|
|
GrannieAnnie...
|
Just put the question in a web search and see what comes back, sometimes
it works :)
(I've just installed QuoteFix and am playing with the emoticoms!)
:o)
;)
:(
:P
jamps...

Fun aren't they? 8-)
GrannieAnnie...

Is there a list somewhere for these smileys? :o)

Thank you, you are wonderful. :*

No, sorry, there isn't one for blush... You can eeeeeeeek! if you like
Ali...
|
You could create one - there's a blushing smiley (icon_redace.gif) at
See my other post for how to add it.

Annie
PS Frogman - the first one shows a smiley with a toothy grin but the
motorbike one doesn't work I'm afraid.

Frogman...

But does this one show? >:D as a flaming devil or this one o-\o as a
motor bike

You forgot this one... fptf® :o)

There are several Utilities around which can let you Set that Option
(M$ TweakUI is one)
But anyway...
The whole point of it all is that you *should* be using a PassWord
on your Account, when you Log in to windoze, so as to make things
more Secure.
jamps...

I was hoping to make just one or two folders 'Private' not the complete PC.
Michaelangelo...
|
This may be quite irrelevant but if the files that you do want to keep
private happen to be Microsoft Word files, ie .doc files, it's worth
knowing that Word allows you to password protect them individually. With
the file open in Word just go to Tools/Options and click on the 'Save'
tab and the password option is down at the bottom of the dialogue box.
jamps...
|
Great!! Thanks Mike - it wor*ed on an individual file.
I tried the same thing with a folder but that has put the dreaded 'password'
back onto the screen at boot-up! :-(
|
There are also free programs which will allow you to password protect
individual files or folders. Just web-search for 'password folders
freeware' (without the quotes).
jamps...
|
I'll have a look at those but I shall probably get confuzzled at the amount
of programmes.
|
|
|
I know a lot of people often say things like "I don't need/want to
GrannieAnnie...
|
Thank you PMJ and Ali
I did what you said and do you think I could get it to work?
Then I 'rebooted' OE and it worked fine. I've not got a blush but surely
I'm the only one it works for?
Just test it in case
:?) blush.gif
Thanks again.
Annie
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
Well I'ver just added it to mine. Now to check if it is w*rking within
acceptablre parameters. :?)
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
Well that hasn't w*rked I wonder if there's anothe emoticons.ini file it
must be added to as well? Let's go look see.
|
Ali...
|
You could also add the line
blush.gif blush
or
blush.gif Blushhhhhh
and have the word replaced, if you wanted to.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
No I've done both those, and they're both there, so might be a reboot
thing.
The blush.gif icon dragged into the emoticons folder and
:?) blush.gif added into and saved in the emoticons.ini file.
GrannieAnnie...
|
Try just closing down OE and then starting it again, it worked for me.
I can see your blushes!
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
Tried that and it didn't w*rk. Did a full reboot but still no luck. :)

bother with using a PassWord, cos it's my Computer", but that's
basically, just asking for trouble & can lead to all sorts of problems.
jamps...
|
There's very little on my PC that I would like to keep completely private.
