Aries...
What prog do I use to open them please ?

Mikk...
As several have alreadty suggested You need Nero or similar

There's a nice little freeware one called burnatonce

That is minimalist but works great, especially good for slower machines

File menu - open image - point it the location of the ISO - press the
'write' button - job done

pmj...
If it's a CD/DVD ISO Image File, then you don't need to *Open* them
as such, though you can do, (if you really want to, or if you need
to Extract stuff from it) using things like ISO Buster from Smart
Projects...

Aries...
The trouble is when I click on the iso download it opens up in WMP!! I

pmj...
Well, you're not s'posed to (Double) Click on it!
You don't actually need to *Open* it.

windoze doesn't have (come with) anything that can (usefullY) Open
an ISO CD/DVD Image File.

So if it Opens up in WMP, then you (or something) has (erroneously)
Associated it wit hthe .ISO File Extension.

want to copy it to a cd rom but can't find a way to do it :(

pmj...
No.
You *don't* want to *Copy* it to a CD Rom!!!]
That's not what an ISO File is for.

It needs *Burning* to a CD Rom, but it mustn't just be Copied
(as a File).
You don't want a CD Rom that contains an ISO File on it!
Yo uwant a CD that *is* the ISO File!!!
:-)

pmj...
Did you not ever make a Slipstream WinXP Install CD for your WinXP
Installation?

That would have Helped you learn (in the small Steps that are usually
best for this sort of thing) about ISO Images & what they are, how
to use them & what to do with them.

But Opening up an ISO Image File isn't really going to do what you
want (& expect?) to do with them.
You need to use a CD Burning Program that can Write ISO Files to CD
& that means Write the ISO File as a complete Image, not just as a
File onto the CD.

Most CD/DVD Burning Programs such as Nero & Roxio/Adaptec etc can
do that, but don't try & use the Built-in windoze CD Burning thingy -
that just Copies the File to the CD, which isn't what you need.

Aries...
Is there a free Nero download available do you know. I had Nero once but
that was on my old pc :(

pmj...
Yep, there is.
On the Nero Website.

But didn't your New Dell PC come with Nero?
Or Roxio?

But you can also get various other (Free!) things which will Burn
an ISO Image to CD as well.

Have a look around.

Use web-search to Search for them, or have a look at the README Files
that come with (or are on the Website(s) or CD that supplies the
ISO Image File.

BTW - with all this Linux type stuff, they often refer to "HOWTO"
Files.

If you're going to get involved with all that sort of thing,
trying various different Linux things, you're going to have to
get used to (finding &) Reading loads of "HOWTO" type Files!
:-)

Aries...
It does help, thanks so much Bram, downloading now :)

Jeff Gaines...
That was a while back, pmj :-)

KDE has an indexed manual in HTML, of course you have to get Linux
running to use it!

Bram...
If you want to burn an iso image to CD then use either Nero or Roxio Creator
and select the option Burn image to CD. You'll need a blank disk in the
drive.

The previously blank CD will become your linux operating system CD I
assume..?

;-)

What happened to the one you got from the Mag then...?

..and what flavour was it..?

..and what flavour is this one..?

Tickettyboo...
When I did the slipstream updates into an XP install thingy, I used Iso
buster to extract the necessary file to make the cd bootable. From what I
remember the actual file extracted was an .img file.
I got the info on the 'how' from this site
Maybe a looksee at that would help with whatever you are doing? Or at
least point you in the right direction to apply the same principles if
they are relevant.

Aries...
Not sure that will help me ? I've downloaded a couple of Linux and they

pmj...
How it will Help you is by explaining about what an ISO File is
& what you can do with it.
& why an ISO File is needed & why it has to be done in certain ways.

are saved automatically as iso exts not directly to a cd rom :( Not sure

Tickettyboo...
Sorry, I should have been clearer. That page shows the options to follow
to make a bootable cd in both Nero and Easy Cd Creator. If you are ( as I
sorta guessed) trying to make a bootable cd, then it shows the options you
should take in that cd burning software. If you don't have either of those
particular progs then look at the options and maybe relate it to whatever
cd burning software you use.

Aries...
Ta Boo. Now I've downloaded the free trial of Nero I should be able to do
what I need to now :)

Bram...
I've replied up there ^
;-)

Aries...
I downloaded two versions of Linux before I bought the magazine with free
disk. One is Knoppix and the other Mandrake

Bram...
I didn't think Mandrake did a Live CD. I couldn't see one on the Mandrive

Bram...
Is that a live CD then..?. I didn't know that.

biggeordie...
Yep, they call it Move rather than LiveCD.

Bram...
I'll try to remember
:-)

Mikk...
They should call it crawl instead, it's awfully slow compared to most
live CD's. In fact the only one slower is the effort by Suse

Both Mandrake and Suse make decent installable Linux versions, but the
live versions are bordering on unusable with the amount of time it takes
to boot them - and definitely not for slow machines with less than 512
MB RAM

site.

What's the mag then ..?

Aries...
The Mag is - Linux - just that!

Bram...
Is it a good read then..?

pmj...
& what one is the one that came with the Mag?

Linux User & Developer Magazine, this Month (Issue 58) comes with
a Knoppix 4.0.2 Live CD

& Linux Magazine, last Month (Issue 63) comes with a Ubuntu 5.10
(Breezy Badger) Live CD

Being a "Live CD", they are Bootable, & don't need Installing onto
the PC
& also, being a *Bootable* CD, they don't need any ISO Image File
to be burnt to CD first.
Some Magazines give away CDs that *contain* an ISO Image, but you
would then need to Burn the Image to CD, just like you do when you
Download one.

Jeff Gaines...
I have to confess to doing that a couple of times when I was trying to
find the right option in Nero :-(

An iso image is, literally, a file that contains a complete image of a
CD (or sometimes a floppy or HD). I've only ever used Nero to burn one
to a CD - there's an option on one of the menus (sorry Nero not
installed here ATM) called 'Burn Image'. If you select that it will
produce a dialog asking you to select the image - it will then burn it
back to the CD with the layout it needs to produce a working, and
bootable, CD.

It can be awkward to find the option because it's not in a logical
place, from memory it's about the third or fourth menu from the left. I
don't think it's in Nero Express, I got quite exasperated with my
daughter once talking her through it on the 'phone before I realised
she was using Express (sorry, Gemma).

Aries...
thanks Jeff, that is very clear, now I know what to do , :)

pmj...
Well yes!!!
That's cos yo umight need to change the contents slightly.

& the ISO Image File Format is a *Standard* Format (defined by the
International Standards Organisation) for distributing *Images*
of CDs (& DVDs).

They are no use if just *Copied* as a File to a CD (other than for
Distributing it to someone else)

pmj...
Read the Instructions!!!

Aries...
what where ?

:-)

Aries...
Still reading it - looks very informative. Have no you seen it on the
shelves?

Like Boo says, start off with the easy stuff first!
Like making a WinXP Install CD
Or making a Slipstreamed WinXP Install CD

Then when you know a bit about that sort of thing, you can start
doing lots of different things like making Linux Live CDs etc.
