Joe...
I've just bought a second hand KVM switch (make SHGD, model KYS-102) and it
didn't come with a user manual.

Does any know where I can find out the keyboard hotkey(s) for swapping
between ports?

*Also posted in alt.pcnews*

Joe...
Yes it should, but I posted it alt.pcnews first and only thought about
putting it in here later.

Joe...
Again "I know, I know" LOL ;-)

I now have the original user guide from the seller and it seems that this
particular model is not HotKey swichable :-(

Thanks everyone.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
So it looks like the one on the URL I posted then?

Joe...
Yes, very similar.

That has a button on it!! When I first connected mine up I spent ages
searching for the same sort of thing on it. It took me ages to find the
hot key instructions on the small leaflet that came with it. They were in
very small print which looked like they were added as an after thought.

Joe...
This leaflet say "PC Selection - Button" :-(

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
So why the :( , it w*rks doesn't it?

Joe...
Yes it does and for ?8 I'm not really complaining.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
How much????????????????? My brand new one, with hot key switching -
including audio switching was , £20 - - - - - - - - just.

pmj...
So that means yours cost (over) twice as much as Joe's then?...

His cost £8 (that's 8 (Eight) Quid) - & yours cost £20 (that's
20 (Twenty) Quid)

In his Post, it said (& showed up as) "?8", which is cos his
Newsreader is Set to Send Posts only in 7Bit...

Joe...
Now how did that change (recently) then? .....and how do I change it back?
(40tude Dialog)

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

& a GBP "£" Character is an *8*Bit Character, so it gets replaced
with a Question Mark Character "?" When it's Sent as 7Bit ASCII

Joe...
Half of that was postage though (and I *still* don't need audio) LOL

Rabbit...
Why does £8 show here as ?8 ?

pmj...
Cos it was *Sent* as "?8"!!!
:-)

Look at the Message Source (CTRL+F3)

In case that doesn't show right I'll type it different. Why does (pound
sign)8 show up here as (question mark)8

pmj...
See my other Replies in this Thread.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
On mine it's a double click on the *scroll Lock* key .
But mine's a model CS-62A made by Aten, but it's worth a try I suppose.

Joe...
Tried - no luck - thanks FN.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Gonna be trial and error then. Presumably a key/s that isn't/aren't in
normal use I suppose. Perhaps Ctrl something or other.

Or could you contact these people?

pmj...
Ah!
Yep, that's what I suspected when I saw the (brief) description
of it on that Web Page.
(You need to "read between the lines" a bit, when you look at Product
Descriptions & Specifications!!!)...

Very often, Firms claim (& describe) something (such as
"PC selection via Push Buttons") that is actually a *Limitation*
as being a "Feature"!!!
:-(

Joe...
LOL - true

pmj...
Glad you got it sussed.
BTW - How much did you pay for it on EBay?

Joe...
Eight Quid delivered.

Was it really very much cheaper than similar (but better) things
available from other Sites or from places such as Maplins?

Joe...
It does the job and is better that what I had cos it has replaced my old 4
port "turny switch" one which was a bit clunky and quite big (a 4 port
verion of one of these http://www.catskillsupply.com/images/12500.jpg ).

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Does it switch the audio as well. Mine switces audio to speakers but not
microphones, so I have a separate mike on the other tower.

Joe...
Nope - but then again I don't need that for what I'm using it for.

Joe...
Subject corrected

Aries...
What is it and what does a KVM SWITCH BOX do please Joe ?

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
Hi Val, not Joe but a KVM switch allows you to use two Computers with one

pmj...
KVM - Keyboard Video & Mouse

mouse, keyboard and monitor.
You connect the two base units and monitor to the rear of the KVM and the
your mouse etc to the front of it.
Pressing a button on it allows you to switch computers or you can use

pmj...
(with some/most, but not all KVM Switches)

keyboard short cuts.
HTH

Joe...
Thanks for that pmj.
I'm trying the 8 bit route for a while - let's see how that goes.
At least I know how to change it now.

Joe...
?8 - how does that appear then?

Joe...
How about this then? ££££££££

pmj...
See for yourself...
:-)

Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

Whereas before, you had it Set to...

Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
How did you do that then? (or should that be £ ?) :)

Joe...
Changed from

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

to

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
So why had it been changed in the first place, or hadn't anybody noticed it
before?

Joe...
The latter I think - I've just had a look on groups and found that
I've been posting 7Bit *forever* LOL

Joe...
Thanks Terry.

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
No problem :)

You can also read this Val http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch

Aries...
thanks a bunch Terry, you splained it very clearly :)

pmj...
So...

It's a bit like using something (a Software Utility) such as VNC -
Virtual Network Computing...

To See & Control one Computer from another, using just one Keyboard,
Screen/Monitor & Mouse etc, but using a KVM Switch, it's more
complicated, (though some people can sort of "relate" to complicated

Jeff Gaines...
I don't see how you can say that!

pmj...
Easily!
:-)

A KVM is just a switch, bit more complex than a 2 way light switch but
similar principle. You just plug the cables in and it works, not much use

pmj...
Yep - but it needs all those (extra, additional) Plugs & Cables
& things, doesn't it?

& they've all got to be Plugged into the right holes.

Jeff Gaines...
Most electronic things work better if the cables are plugged in the right
places :-)
I bought my KVM with cables so there was nothing else to buy.

But with VNC (especially if you already have an Ethernet or WiFi
LAN - Local Area network) Connection set up & running), you just Fire
up the VNC Server on one Machine & the VNC Viewer on the other.

Jeff Gaines...
How? You presumably need a mouse, keyboard and monitor on each PC so you
can fire up VNC? That would mean 4 mices, 4 keyboards and 8 monitors in
my study!!!

Yes, OK, there are occasions (such as you mention below) where a KVM
Switch works & VNC doesn't (such as when looking at the BIOS Setup
Screen & the Boot Up process before windoze is Running )

Jeff Gaines...
And installing an OS.

with a laptop but for running 4 desktops with one mouse and keyboard it's

pmj...
Well, "simple" is in the "eye of the beholder" isn't it?
:-)

That's a subjective thing!
Yes, I know some people do think of (& find) actual, physical,
mechanical Switches & Cables & Plugs & things simple, but others
prefer using Software to do a lot of that sort of thing.

Jeff Gaines...
I can't see any difference between plugging cables into a PC or a KVM,
using a KVM instead of 4 x mices and keyboards is a lot less cables, you
only have to plug in 1 x monitor and 1 x mouse.

quick and simple.

I find VNC so slow that it's almost unusable, if you're running XP then

pmj...
Strange!!!
I've always found it very quick!!!

Jeff Gaines...
Interesting, not my experience, it always seems to slow down during a
session as well, even on reasonably specced PC's.

Remote Desktop is better.

pmj...
Yep, but the WinXP Remote Desktop (the Server bit) is only available
with WinXP *Pro* - the *Viewer* comes with both WinXP Home & Pro,
but not the *Server* past.

You can *view* (& Control) a WinXP Pro Machine from a WinXP Home
Machine OK, but not the other way round.

Jeff Gaines...
I must admit I've given up on XP Home, I stick to Pro now.

Electrical & Mechanical type things like that better than using
Software Utilities) cos it's done using Mechanical & Electrical/
Electronic) Switches & needing the Computers to be *Physically*
Connected up to (& close to) each other, rather than (as things
like VNC allow) having them anywhere - next to each other, in the
same room, in another Room, down the Road, in another Town - or even
at the other end of the Country or on the other side of the world.
:-)

Bram...
I have had three different KVM switches. Two of them switch with pressing
the scroll lock key twice and then the escape key. Pressing control key
twice and then escape, also does it.
On the third model it is scroll lock twice and then either the up or down
arrow key.
