Female Logic - Help!!!

During the course of trying to sort out my daughter's DVD editing I said
that I would look for a program to convert VOB files to something she
could edit, but it might not be free. She said that I should get my
Barclay Card out because she didn't cost me anything now, whereas when she
lived at home she cost me hundreds, or probably, thousands, of pounds, so
I could buy it for her.

I now find that instead of selling the PC components I have just replaced
I have ended up ordering a new case and a couple of DVD burners to build
her a new PC. Instead of being a couple of hundred quid up I'm a hundred
down.

How did this happen and how can I protect myself against it in the future,
