If anybody has time can you have a look at:
and let me know if the combo boxes in the bottom right corner show up
properly. In Firefox 1.0.2 and 1.5 they're partially hidden under the
adverts and unusable for me.
pmj...
|
I think the prob is mainly due to the fact that they've used
Macromedia Dreamweaver to Write the Pages & that they've used
a combination of Tables as well as CSS Styling, for the
Positioning/Layout.
That sort of approach to Web Design (which, unfortunately is used by
a lot of Websites) very often leads to various probs with the layout.
:-(
& they've *also* used (in the CSS Style Info) a *mixture* of
different ways of specifying the Font Size - some are specified
in "Points" (pt) & others in Pixels (px).
& that is *Guaranteed* to cause all sorts of probs, in various
Browsers.

I get the same (Firefox 1.5).
Jeff Gaines...

OK, thanks, it's not me then :-)

On my Firefox 1.5 some of the selection boxes are virtually off the screen
on the right hand side and others from what was the left-hand column in IE6
showing in the right-hand column.
Poor programming I think.

I've just had an email from them confirming "it was a mistake in the
formatting code for the page and I have corrected the problem."
It seems fine now, didn't have the heart to tell them I'd bought my
laptop elsewhere and that I was busy burning recovery CD's on it :-)

firefox 1.07 on linux (fedora core 3) shows the combo
boxes on top of the image, and usable
Jeff Gaines...
|
Thanks, Greg :-)
Ironically I was looking there as I'm thinking about getting a new
laptop and becoming a penguin!
|
it's possible the OS is as important as the version,
perhaps?

In 1.0.7 they're partially covered, but the dropdown lists are fully visible
and usable when selected.

They show up just fine here on my version of Firefox Jeff -
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111
Firefox/1.5

Well I suppose the sun shines on the righteous :-)

Yes, both my Vaio and Portege re-install in about 10 minutes, this
wasn't a standard re-install though, this is the re-install you do that
re-writes the whole HD - including the restore partition itself. IBM put
some very clever stuff up front, if you have a problem you press the
'Access IBM' button on booting and you can copy all your files off to
any medium (USB, CD, DVD, external drive etc.), connect to a network,
even log on to IBM's web site for support! Very clever, I think they've
done what you have been doing, 2 independent OS's on 1 machine.
pmj...
|
Ah!
Yes that would enable them to do it OK.
|
pmj...
|
But you would still need to be careful not to delete that other
Partition, (or the stuff on it) wouldn't you?
Jeff Gaines...
|
Whoops!
The set of restore CD's restores the whole drive to factory default,
including the restore partition - I made double sure of that before I
wiped it :-))
|
& if you *do* Delete it, can you get it back OK?
Can you ReCreate it & Restore the stuff onto it OK?
|
Normally you just restore from the restore partition, but I broke it too
much for that :-) Part of it was my fault, at one stage I didn't think

But isn't that rather defeating the point of using Linux? -
If you're then going to Run normal windoze Programs on it?
Aren't there enough other Newsreaders available for Linux,
to find one that you like?
Jeff Gaines...
|
Yes, I'm on my fourth with this post, may stick with this one, I was
spoilt by XanaNews, I found it the best Windows news reader by miles!
|
|
anything was happening so I power cycled it, probably not a good move!
Anyway I did it again this morning, this time I fed it the CD's then
left it and did half an hour on the keyboard (the other type), this time
it was fine - although one big partition again.
So, once I knew I could put it back as it was fresh out of the box I
booted to the Debian DVD, removed all the partitions (including the
recovery partition) and put Linux on it. It's working well, wireless
network is up, power management working, just finding my way round the apps.
Poor laptop, within 48 hours it's been partitioned and wiped 5 times,
had XP Home installed twice, XP Pro once and Linux twice :-)
Anyway, plan now is to keep it entirely as a Linux box, have to see how
I get on with it!

See this printscreen of the page here Jeff - mind you I had the view option
set at page style - no style
Jeff Gaines...
|
Thanks for that Val :-)
I've down-loaded and installed Opera, that shows it fine - and it seems
to be free now!
I don't mind using IE but I do like tabbed browsing, the next version
will fix that :-)
Rabbit...
|
Using IE I get an entirely different looking page from the screenshot Val
posted. If you want I'll do a screenshot.
Aries...
|
So do I using IE Sandra so no need to post a screenshot but thanks anyway
:)
Rabbit...
|
It was in case Jeff was interested.
|
|
Jeff Gaines...
|
Many thanks Mrs Rabbit :-)
I down-loaded Opera and it's fine in that, so far seems as good as
Firefox. I sent them an email as well pointing out their page was
broken.
Anyway, I have done the deed and ordered a new laptop, but not from
them, found it cheaper at Dabs - I don't like Dabs but the guarantee is
from IBM/Lenovo so went for best offer I could find!
