May...
...drink more water (much more) during this heatwave, even if you're not
moving around a lot. Dehydration starts before we really very thirsty. And

Pam the goose...
An addition here - sip the water, don't take it in fast cos if you do your
body immediately stores it which is one of the reasons we swell during hot
weather.

~~Linda~~...
Hmm I didn't know that... I think I usually do something in between, more
like quite a few large gulps then back to what I'm doing, then more a
little later. It's easier at home I suppose, then I tend to have a glass
and like you say, sip more than tip it back in one go! :o)

noreen...
Well now I am pleased you said that , just thought I was er Chubby ??

Sipping it constantly all the hours you are up will make kidneys do the
correct thing and you'll feel tons better. Give it a few days to start doing
things correctly but when it starts you'll know. And you'll feel oodles

noreen...
Barb told me that this morning so I have been drinking all day !!only water
i assure you ;-)))))

better!

~~Linda~~...
Noted and will try to do better from now on. I did notice a problem when we
went out for a walk the other day. It wasn't supposed to be such a long
walk so we foolishly didn't take water but then decided to take a different
footpath, only to discover the gate was closed because the cows had been
moved and we couldn't cross the field, so had to do a long detour, which
then ended in another detour because the scenery was nicer! It also took a
lot longer, so although we'd left at eight in the morning, it was getting
on for half past eleven when we got back and by then was pretty hot.
Anyway, by the time we were almost home, my hands were distinctly swollen
and it actually hurt to try and make a fist, the skin felt so tight. I was
a bit light-headed too but ok once we got back home and could have some
water and sit in the shade. Actually hubby had to stand on the dustbin and
climb over the back gate to let me in and my first drink was from the
outside tap as we hadn't taken a house key and my daughter was in the
shower, lol.

We learnt our lesson though and now will always take water with us!

~~Linda~~...
I took a litre bottle to w*rk with me and topped it up before I left! Had
more water and squash during the day plus a couple of cups of tea. It's
surprising just how much more you can drink in this weather, without
continual trips to the loo! I'm sure there is also a percentage of water in
my glass of wine, lol

try to take in mainly *water-holding* foods, salads, tomatoes, juicy
fruits, etc.

~~Linda~~...
Do you mean water 'releasing' foods rather than holding? Surely they don't
make you 'hold' water, as in 'soaking it up' or am I misreading what you
wrote?

May...

May...
about a glass and a half within minutes. !!!

Pam the goose...

~~seadancer~~...
Thanks for the good advice, Pam.
It's been warm here in NY State too... and humid!
Is it humid there in the UK?

Ali...

~~seadancer~~...
LOL ... and I had tried to be accurate! I had searched the web for and found a
reference to: "Mahler's Planet Suite" at
If you read the article, you'll be as confused as I am. LOL
Thanks for the correction, JoeH. Yes, it was Holst who wrote The Planets.
Now... what did Mahler write? LOL !

JoeH...
I don't know, but I'm sure it'll be here
Just here I reckon it's 100% humidity, as the water's condensing out and
forming an aerosol (mist). Fortunately, the mist is blocking much of the
heat, so it's not uncomfortable.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I don't know what we've done right but at the moment it's 22.8°C with a
humidity of 57% and a nice breeze. Just about perfect. :)

~~seadancer~~...
Pam says it's dry; Ali says it's humid; FN says it's medium.
I guess there's quite a difference in weather all over the UK,
even though it's a comparatively small country. Interesting.

Rabbit...
You can got to any part of the UK and have all four seasons on one day. It's
what is known in MS talk as a *feature* :-)

Ali...
Or in Music terms - Vivaldi

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
You guess right Sea:
This is the 5 day forecast for where I live:

This for Len:

This for Sandra:

~~seadancer~~...
Hmmm, I'm not quite sure I understand your meaning, Sandra.
Can you explain "MS talk" and the word "feature" a bit further?
Thanks.

Ali...
web-search for "It's not a bug, it's a feature".

and this for BoyPete:

~~seadancer~~...
Quite amazing. Thanks for the links to the BBC Weather.
I like the icons they have for sunny, rainy, and cloudy.
They're nice & big and easy to interpret.
BTW, my post above didn't show up on my OE.
So you're reply confirmed that it did indeed go thru. Thanks!
Something must have gone wrong with the servers.

Ali...
I'm on the east cost, FN is near the middle, and Pam near the west coast. At
the time there was a massive cloud/mist covering most of the North Sea, but
only a little bit of land (the bit I occupy), so my weather was quite unlike
the rest of the country.

Pam the goose...
No, just hot and dry!

pmj...
Huh?

Which United Kingdom are you in then, Pam???

I thought that one of *the* most typical characteristics of the UK
(that's England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland - or the "British
Isles" which also includes Southern Ireland - Eire) Summer *is* that
it is *incredibly* Humid, close & sweltering!!!

jasongrehan...
The UK doesn't include Ireland/Eire.

pmj...
Yep, I know!
:-)

~~seadancer~~...
Didn't find a quote, but found:
Among those was:
What was his famous answer?

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Try this one Sea:
He stated on national TVto viewers the night before that there definitely
wouldf *not* be a hurricane in Britain.

Last night BBC weatherman Michael Fish reassured viewers the system would
track along the English Channel, but instead it cut a swathe right across
the south of the country.

& I thought that's what I said in my Post?

jasongrehan...
Ok, gotcha. Possibly you misplaced a few parentheses then?

pmj...
Yep.
Maybe I did!
Sorry - on Re-reading that bit I wrote again, I can see that there
may have been some ambiguity (or "unclearness, if there's such a word)
in what I Posted.

Sorry about that.

The *UK* (United Kingdom) doesn't include Eire (Southern Ireland)

But the "British Isles" does, doesn't it?

jasongrehan...
Well, Irish people don't recognise that there's such a thing as the
"British Isles" since that would imply that Eire is somehow British.

pmj...
Maybe Irish people don't recognise it, but there's no doubt that
(Southern) Ireland (Eire) *is* (Geographically) part of the "British
Isles"

jasongrehan...
It's the geographic term that I'm talking about. People can call things
whatever they choose, I suppose. I could just as easily counter-claim
that Britain is part of the "Irish Isles".

pmj...
Not really, surely?

Looking at any Map will show a group of Islands in the North Western
part of the Continent of Europe, which is known as (& referred to as)
the "British Isles"

For example...
(Zoom that out a bit to see)

Or...

(That one is already Zoomed out to show it)

& yes, one of that group of Islands (a large one, with lots of other
Islands around it, but which are all smaller than England, Scotland
& Wales) is Ireland (both North & South), but it's not really
realistic to claim that England Scotland & Wales are part of those
"Irish Isles" is it?

Doesn't "part of" (usually) imply being a Sub-Set of a larger
(group of) thing(s)?

Nobody can deny that the Island(s) of Ireland *are* a (smaller)
*part* of the "British Isles" - but it would be very hard to claim
with any certainty that Britain (by which I presume you mean the
Mainland of England, Scotland & Wales, along with its surrounding
Islands, such as the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man & the Isle of
Sheppey etc?) is "part of the Irish Isles"

Even when the actual Temperature isn't all that high, the Humidity
makes it *feel* Hot & Sticky.
:-(

& when the Temperature *is* high (like at the moment), the Humidity
makes it feel even worse!
:-(

We've had a lot of rain and the gnats are really bothersome
when we go for a walk. I cut my walk short this morning because
they were flying around my eyes. It was awful.

Pam the goose...
Find a shampoo and conditioner that smells of lemon or lime - it'll keep the
gnats away:)
And a citrus-smelling bath/shower gel and use it liberally, that sends them
in the other direction, too:)

~~seadancer~~...
Oooo! That's very useful advice! I'll have to try it. Thanks, Pam.
I have some "Natrapel" insect repellent with Citronella as the
active ingredient. It has a citrus-like scent. The label says it's
"DEET-Free" and is safe for children and adults.
I should spray that on myself when I go outside.
Come to think of it, I have a lemon-scented body splash.
That'll smell better than the Citronella! (g)
Maybe I'll take another walk later and see what happens.
Interesting that it's dry there. I think the dry heat is easier to take
than the humid heat. The humidity really knocks the stuffing out of me.
The dampness is depressing.

Pam the goose...
Well, I'm sure it's the first time I've read it!
But then again, with my bleeding brain I'm quite likely to have forgotten
the original, if there was one:))

Yes, try the lemon scented body splash but don't be economical with it, you
need to be able to smell it!

~~seadancer~~...
I used the lemon-scented splash last night when we went
to the park to view the 4th of July Fireworks. It seemed to
have helped, but there was also a good breeze to keep the
bugs away. I enjoyed the scent in any case! Much better than
Citronella! (g) Thanks for the good suggestion!

I think that's the way we all do it.
I certainly did before I was told to sip and the difference it made.

Marg. : o D

... Sorry, no I miswrote it - I meant foods already containing their
natural *wetness*. !

~~Linda~~...
Thanks, that makes more sense. Incidentally, someone (I think in this
group?) mentioned a while back about it being better to eat fruit either on
its own or 'before' a main course, something to do with it fermenting in
the stomach or something like that and being slower to digest? I always
used to eat fruit after dinner in the evening but have now changed to
having it mainly at breakfast time and have definitely found that my tum
isn't as 'noisy' overnight!

marg - revived after the thunder-lightenening and rain came - Short
Power cut for about half-an-hour... no damage done, had turned elec to
Pooter off, also unplugged phone thereto. Ive always got this funny feeling
since friend's T.V. was damaged few years ago in elec storm, at same time
another's cooker went off with a great bang. Perhaps I may be a bit
overworried..... does anyone else take all these precautions ??
Marg.

Such heat affects sufferers of High Blood Pressure (and many others)... the
ideal is to rest if you can - and whoever said "Don't do today what you can
put off until tomorrow" might have uttered good advice, albeit in jest.
Me?? I'm wilting and waiting for the *promised* thunderstorms with heavy
downpours --- do the forecasters occasionally get it right?
Marg - now hanging like a wet sock over side of chair. :-/

Foxy at w*rk...
Got my glass beside me :-)

~~Linda~~...
I know the feeling!

Jackie...
Very good advice Marg, I have been drinking lots but on walking around the
shops this morning my legs feel like ton weights
(perhaps the water has gone to my feet0 Soon got back home and in the
cool again.
