I was on the phone about that time and I thought I heard a *strange*
aircraft, if I'd known I'd have looked out the window. Probably too cloudy
to have got a piccy though.

So why did they not just land at the wrong Derry airbase again?
If it is a potential military situation why land at a civil airport?

That thought struck me too, 'cos surely it's further from Paris to Prestwick
than Paris to Dublin or anywhere in Eire. The only reason I can think is

Perhaps not if you are talking air routes. They don't always go 'as the
crow flies'

another point is, if the aircraft is in UK airspace, then it is going
to get Escorted to a UK airport. Don't need diplomatic squabbles
before the plane gets sorted :-)

because it's surrounded by fields on three sides and water on the fourth and
only two main roads to close if required, though I haven't heard they did
that.

Another reason they'd avoid Eire is it is totally autonomous EU state
outside the UK . Now, the City of Derry is just within that bit of
Ireland, *inside* the UK - only by a few miles though.
next
