Congratulations Anita: You will be able to download very fast
& will not hesitate to download large applications as you probably
did with *dial-up.* ali-pmj-Val-Dave-FN the list is long &
any advise from the five about DSL will be on the money, along
the many silversurvers I left out, will ease your mind if you have
a problem. They helped me many times while giving advise to others
besides myself.
Anita Carter...
|
I know - and I always read the advice that is offered to others in the ng, I
also keep a copy of anything I think might come in handy
|
Dial-up is going the way of example, (VCRs). It's still fine & I had it
for a long time but believe me your computer experience will be easy
& you will love it. There are some disadvantages but I'll let the experts
explain what they are. Good luck.

I am used to using broadband at work - just delayed getting for home use -
because I knew I would spend a lot of time on here lol
Thank you for your good wishes :))

Hey, hey, hey. We can know send you huge amounts of data and junk
files, movies and music and your system will only slow down to the
speed of a dial-up connection.
Anita Carter...
|
But would still be faster than a normal dial-up lol :)
|
Great news. I am sure that you will find that there is a heck of a
lot more out there in virtual-land to be enjoyed.
Anita Carter...
|
Oh definitely - so nice to be connected straight away to a web page, instead
of sitting waiting for it to appear - and giving up because of having to
wait too long :)
Rabbit...
|
Give it time till you get used to it and you'll find you still won't wait
for some pages if they aren't instant. The always on though makes up for
it,enjoy
Anita Carter...
|
Thank you - yes I will enjoy it :)

Aso nice to have your phone line seperate !! and when friends say " never
can get you cos your on the computer " i used to love saying "but it
doesen't make any difference now cos I can phone and be on line at the same
time ;-))))))

Woooooooopie for Anita.
It's great isn't it
Anita Carter...
|
Sure is - had a problem installing, went to the helpline (in India) and was
told I would have to upgrade from ME.
I phoned back and asked for a supervisor, the person that answered asked if
he could help me first - he then talked me through the problem I was having.
He also said he would find out why I was told to upgrade to XP because it
did not work with ME.

No1 son had NTL bb installed on Saturday. Kept getting error messages
so rang the (family) help line in Hertfordshire. :-)

Amazing what one person who is willing to help can do :))

Yahoooooooooooooo! Welcome to a new whoosher ;-)
Anita Carter...

Thanks Joe, thought it was about time I upgraded from dialup.
Next stop is a new pc - still looking at specifications and where to
purchase from. I had this one built for me - but it is cheaper to buy one
already set up, than having one built.
So am seeing what there is about ;)

Congratulations Anita - so what do you think about it?
And what download speeds are you getting?
Anita Carter...

I am pleased so much faster that dialup.
Download speed is 238kb/sec
Upload speed is 235kb/sec

This is what I get on:
Downstream 1866 Kbps (233.3 KB/sec) 2015 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 239 Kbps (29.9 KB/sec) 258 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Anita Carter...
|
I went to that site and this is what I got
Downstream 1179KB/Sec (Actual) 1018 KB (inc overheads)
Upstream 261 Kbps (30.3 Kb/sec) 261 Kbs (incl overheads)

So you have a 1Mbps package then !

I have indeed - tiscali now offer 1Mbps @ £14.99 and 2Mbps unlimited @
£17.99 - you can only get the lower ones if you unable to receive either of

Hi Anita, congratulations on becoming a Whoosher. Enjoy!
A colleague of mine recently got broadband via Tiscali and I looked over his
installation last week and was surprised to see that it was configured as a
'Dial-Up Connection' (with Sagem modem plugged into PC USB socket). This
means that every time he boots up his PC he has to then make a manual
connection to the Internet exactly as if he was still on dial-up. Is yours
configured like this too and is this type of connection unique to Tiscali I
wonder? Certainly with cable, the connection is always on and available
automatically following boot-up.

connect on a web page straight away :)

Thank you - and no I definitely won't do that, have w**k tomorrow anyway ;))

Anita Carter...

Thank you Mike, I will enjoy it indeed lol
The only reason I have not gone onto broadband before is because I knew I
would be on here a lot. I was on evening and weekends only before, so the
use was restricted.
But getting onto web pages have been increasingly slower lately - so I
decided to take the plunge :))
