Tickettyboo...
Does anyone know if you can get a sort of bluetooth ( or something
similar)arrangement for landline telephones..so you can talk handsfree,
whilst maybe being a fair distance away from the handset?

pmj...
Ooh!
That sounds like a *really* useful idea!
But it's *far* too straightforwards for most Manufacturers
to bother with!
:-(

Any info or pointers to webpages would be appreciated, ta!

pmj...
I don't know of any *Bluetooth* (or similar) things that will work
with an ordinary (Landline) Phone - though there are plenty that will

Tickettyboo...
Ok :-)

work with VoIP things like Skype, & with them you can make Calls to
(& Receive Calls from) ordinary Landline Phones (as well as to
& from Mobiles & other Skype users)

andon...
Do you have a DECT phone?

Tickettyboo...
No idea, I just have one that rings and then I talk to folk. This isn't

pmj...
Yep, but I think what andon meant was is it (do you have)
an (ordinary) *Cordless* Phone?

Many (most?) Cordless Phones these days are DECT Phones - DECT
is just the Initials for the Technology & Standards that they use
to make them work - I think it stands for (something like) "Digital
Equipment for Cordless Telephones".

MCC...
I thought it was Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications but I could

pmj...
LOL!
Yep (or should that be no?) I think you may be right!

I was relying on memory & didn't actually go & look it up.

be wrong again ;-)

JoeH...
Take your pick ;-)

pmj...
LOL!

OK, so how does one find out the *definitive* meaning of the
Initials DECT then?

Ah! - Here it is...

Welcome
to the internet presence of the DECT Forum, the globally acting
industry association embracing suppliers and operators of DECT
based terminals, systems, and networks.

DECT stands for "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications"
and denotes a radio technology suited for voice data and networking
applications with range requirements up to a few 100 m. [read more]

for me andon, its for a friend. I did look on the BT site which advertises
the 'first' bluetooth landline. That seems to have a reach of 10m from the
base, so that wouldn't really be suitable for the purpose my pal wants it

pmj...
Yep, Bluetooth is *designed* for (very) Short Range use, Connecting
between things that would normally have wires for the Connection.

There *is* actually a slightly longer Range specification for
Bluetooth (100m?), but that is less commonly used & uses more Power,
so isn't suitable for many things like HeadSets etc.

for. Which is to have a phone in a large-ish house which he can natter on
wherever he is and still be able to carry on doing stuff.

pmj...
Isn't that what ordianry (DECT) Cordless Phones do?

Many of them have a "HandsFree" Mode of Operation - using a Speaker
built-in to the HandSet & a (fairly Sensitive) Microphone.

So you can use them while doing other things.

(though at this point I have to say that I much prefer to concentrate
on what I'm saying on the Phone, without being distracted by other
things & I don't like having conversations with people who are
obviously doing other things & not actually properly concentrating
on the Conversation)

Tickettyboo...
Ok, I will pass that info on and ask that he doesn't ring you

I don't know if any of the DECT Phones taht do "HandsFree" Operation
*also* have a Socket for Plugging in a Separate Earpiece/HeadSet/Mike
thingy, but I'm fairly certain that none of them have a Bluetooth
facility in them.

Bluetooth HandsFree HeadSets seem to be mainly used on *Mobile* Phones
(that's as opposed to ordinary, DECT Cordless Phones)

(& the same thing as I mentioned above applies to them - If you're
Driving, then you shouldn't really be having a long Conversation on
the Phone, surely?)

You either have to not concentrate on the Driving, or keep
interrupting the Conversation.

I am starting to think that what would suit his purposes would be a
cordless phone he could stick in his pocket and a set of headphones like I
use at the w word when I am going to be on the phone a lot. Unless you

pmj...
Yep - but that would only work *if* the DECT Cordless Phone actually
had a Socket for a Headset/Mike thingy. (see above)

Tickettyboo...
ROFLMHO ! even a Boo on a bad day can suss that part out!

thanks pmj

know of something different?

pmj...
It sounds a good idea (for some people & purposes & I really can't
see why the Manufacturers don't already Sell things like that - but
then most Manufacturers don't seem to want to come up with things
that are actually *useful* & *easy* to use!

They just keep on coming up with ever more complicated ways of
doing things.
:-(

& if they can't then *charge* people Usage Fees for them (like the
Phone Companies & Mobile Phone Service Providers do), then they seem
even less likely to come up with simple ideas like the idea of a
(Landline) Phone that works with a HeadSet in the way that you want.

Cash the comedian is starting to be not funny LOL, I have a good sense of
humour, but just like when the girls were young, I can't be doing with
folk that don't know where to stop. Then it goes from mildly amusing to
'annoying so I will just ignore it'

Try this
150057/prod29780012>

Usual Bluetooth limitations will apply regarding range etc, but is
exactly what you describe.
Very simple set up. Plug telephone handset cord into the Plantronics
basestation. Plug basestation into the telephone base, in the hole left
when you unplugged the handset cord.

Otherwise there is a bunch of stuff on Amazon

Tickettyboo...

Thanks Ray, will pass that on for my pal's perusal.

If the limited range of Bluetooth is a problem, and under normal
circumstances it's around 10m, then you need to look at digital cordless
phones with headset capability.
Again there are plenty available. Simple web search for
Cordless+headsets or handsfree+landline will kick off hours of fun and
games.
