When I get that on my old m/c (running 98SE) the only way I found out of it
was to switch off the mains on the back of the tower. Then next boot up it

I occasionally get that, but there are (for me) two alternatives to
switching off the mains: use the reset button, (may need a ball point pen
type object to push it); or hold in the power button on the front until it
switches off. Sometimes the shutdown has gone far enough that Scandisk
doesn't run on boot up.

I sometimes use the reset button too, but since I have to go and get a pen
(it's a very recessed button) I find using the main power switch does the
same thing. More often than not scandisk will kick in but not always. Then
again, it doesn't hang very often.

Ali...
Using the reset button is supposed to be better, as nothing is switched off,
therefore no electrical transients, and no head crashes.

Seems I like living dangerously then. :)

wold do a disk scan to make sure all was OK. A format and re-install
cured it (perhaps I shouldn''t say that, it's too much like tempting fate)
once and for all.

Hi FN - Yep that is what I do - switch off the mains.
You could always do the re-install all over again if fate *is* tempted.
I tried the link Joe suggested and after following the instructions it
started up in Safe Mode. I shut down and re-started - still in safe mode
so I went back and unticked the box I had been told to 'tick' - then got a
'normal' start up and have left it at that.

Try installing this:

Have been busy the last couple of days proof reading and editing a friends
story - it has been an interesting exercise.
Keep having problems with Windows Shutting Down - get the message "Windows
is Shutting Down" *but it doesn't* - the window just hangs. I have left it
for ages but it doesn't close. Then of course it is the "Because Windows
was not shut down correctly etc."

Ponder...
Sounds like the old Windows 98 SE netjbex shutdown bug to me. There was a
patch available...

It isn't any good shouting at it "But I did do it correctly" - it
takes no notice!
