Today is a special day for us.
We're going to pick up our new Maltese dog.
BunnyHare...
|
Oh I am sure it will be a lovely day
I hope you and your new pet have many happy years together
|
We'll be driving downstate to get him from a breeder whom
I found online yesterday. I hope we're doing the right thing.
This Maltese is almost a year old and has been living with the
breeder (who is also a dog trainer) since he was born last Sept.
I'll post more soon, when I have more to tell.
Meanwhile, please try to think of a good name for him.
They call him "Kyle" now, but, IMO, that's not a good name for a dog.
I want to call him "Romeo" because Maltese are Italian, but
Jeff Gaines...
|
I hope you don't go to Malta and say that, the Maltese will be very upset.
They have a long and proud history and were on 'our' side in the war
fighting the Italians, for which they suffered appallingly. Their bravery
and resilience led to Malta being awarded the George Cross, I expect they
would rather have had a food convoy though.

Thank you for the information, Jeff.
"Country of origin: Central Mediterranean region (Italy)".
The page also tells about the association of the Maltese breed with Malta.
Also, I searched the web for and found the following quote:
"Whatever its origin, it [Maltese] is considered an Italian breed."
Above quote is from:
Of course, Malta is located just south of Sicily, Italy.
So that may explain the associating of the Maltese breed with Italians.

Thank you, Barb. It was a lovely day.
We even got to visit our son downstate where we picked up
the dog. We had a delicious meal at his house. A wonderful visit.

....Errr no more than I'm french because France is less than 60 miles across
the English channel!? The youngsters might speak it cos of the TV
channels.... otherwise you might as well call them
Lebanese,Syranian,Palestinian,Mughabi Arabs! - except Maltese is the only
Semitic language using a roman alphabet!
Also if your "kelb" is a Maltese Terrier then it's apparently not a native
breed?
While you're searching for a name that reflects his character you could
always try some old favourites like "Gozo" (Malta's northern island) or
"Fenek"( from tal-Fenek which looks like a Pharoah Hound.....ish).
|
DH doesn't care for the name.
Rabbit...
|
I'd rather have a dog called Kyle than Romeo 'cos I can't see myself
standing anywhere and calling Romeo :-)
MCC...
|
Romeo! Romeo! Wherefore art thou?
|
|
We won't call him "jorji"; that was our last Maltese dog's name.
Jorji passed away in Feb. 2006 at 17 years of age. We miss him
so much that we are eager to have another Maltese in our lives.
Any ideas for a good name for our new Maltese dog? Suggestions welcome.

When I was serving in Malta with the Royal Navy away back in the late 1950s
there was a Maltese tenor opera singer called Oreste Kirkop - don't know if
that would suit a Maltese terrier though!
Oreste! Get off that sofa!
Oreste! Leave that lady's leg alone!
I dunno! Has quite a ring to it

is that just a Gut feeling Mike? ;-)

Having read the thread I'm voting for Geordie. It's similar to you Jorgi but
~~seadancer~~...
|
We took our dog to the vet today. He said that quite a few
people call their new dogs the same name as their previous dog.
They often change only the spelling. So your suggestion
(for calling him Geordie) is a similar idea.
However, for us, there was only one jorji. So now we've decided
to call our new dog Romeo. At least we get a lot of laughs when
we tell people his name. (g) It's a name you don't soon forget. (g)

different.

The only Geordie I know is a Scotsman :)
|
JoeH...
|
Can't disagree with that LOL
|
|
DH suggested "Giusseppe", but it doesn't seem to fit. (lol)
~~seadancer~~...
|
I had never heard the name, "Geordie", until I came to Sisu.
|
I'll post more soon here when I have more to tell.
~~seadancer~~...
|
We are now back at home with our new Maltese dog!
I am absolutely thrilled with him!
BunnyHare...
As soon as we're settled in, I'll respond to the replies
which I see here in this thread. I haven't had time to read
any of them, but I wanted to touch base here and let you
know that our "mission was accomplished" !
I have piccies which I will put online soon.
I have so much to tell you about Romeo! Yes, we've decided
to definitely call him Romeo because he's such a lover... a
real cuddler and lap dog... just what I wanted.
Jorji was cute and adorable, but he refused to cuddle.
Romeo is resting happily on my lap right now...
more about my new lover later. (g)

He is certainly cute Sea, yes Romeo is a good name.
By the way I noticed you are a member of the Red Hat Club, we have seen
these laies in their red hats and purple dresses many times and wondered
what it was all about, are you a secret society ? and what do the men wear ?
Please don't ask in here what they say about red hats, you really don't want
to go there ;-)
|
BunnyHare...
|
Sounds as if Romeo has settled in very well. Bet you are still hugging
him :-))

Welcome to your new dog.
Why not call him Falcon after the Maltese Falcon
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thank you, Pat. What a good idea. I never thought of
that association of words. We've decided on Romeo as
a name, but I'm sure this lively fellow would make a good
falcon... he's so sharp. He's keeping us on our toes. (g)
linedancer...

He sure will keep you busy, he looks a bundle of mischief, enjoy him :-)

I am sure you are doing the right thing Sea :-)
Pictured please
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks, Jen - I hope we've done the right thing. (g)
Romeo is keeping us very busy.
He seems to need a lot of training... thinks he
can go anywhere... even on the kitchen counters.
He climbs everywhere if you let him... breaks through
all the barriers I set for him... very clever and persistent.
I hate to punish him when he doesn't know any better.
So for now, I'm trying the reward system.
At least he seems to be quite a nice companion, being
a lap dog and a cuddler.
For safety reasons, we're going to buy a good-sized crate to
keep him in when we go out and leave him home alone.

Oh he is lovely Sea :-)
You will soon have him trained

Yes, I hope so, Jen. He seems to be catching onto
things quite quickly.

Hi Sea: How about Salvatore or Sal. One more, Dominic or Coke.
~~seadancer~~...
|
Good Italian names, John. Thanks.
We've decided on Romeo for a name.
The owner of the country store here is named Sal.
I wouldn't want to name my dog after him. LOL
I had thought of "Coco" for a cute name, but Romeo
is white, not cocoa colored.

Old Grizzly...

well as its the George Cross island then call him George ;-)
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks for the suggestion, Len. I searched the web for and learned about
The George Cross. However, our previous Maltese was named
"jorji", after Lake George, (the lake was named after King George).
So we didn't want to use that special name, even though we like it.
|
JoeH...
|
"Geordie" sounds good to me ;-)
~~seadancer~~...
|
LOL - I can guess why. I searched the web for "Geordie" and found:
"Geordie refers to a person from the Tyneside region
of England and the adjacent areas, or to the dialect
spoken by these people." Live and learn. (g)

Graham...
|
How about "Dom" or "Mint" or "Mintoff" after the legendary Prime
Minister of Malta, Dominic Mintoff?
~~seadancer~~...
|
LOL - I'm learning a lot of history from all the suggestions.
I had never heard of Mintoff before this. Thanks, Graham.
"Dom" might have been fitting... because our new Maltese is
dominating our lives right now. He has a bad case of
separation anxiety and refuses to be left alone. He does lots
of squealing when we go into another room. He also likes to
chew on my computer cable and wires. But he's so-o-o cute! (g)

What about Malteser (as per the chocolate ones) ?
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...

Or just *Er* He'd be your Maltese- *Er* LOL
Anita...
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks, Anita. What are the "chocolate ones"?
I'm not familiar with them.
The name "Teaser" would have been suitable for this
little monkey whom we've finally decided to call "Romeo".
He's full of mischief! LOL But he's adorable.
Anita...

Should have known you would say something like that ;)
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...

You mean you didn't then? :)
Anita...
|
I did I suppose, and you did not let me down ;))
|

~~seadancer~~...
|
Er? "Er", as in comedy of errors, which is what we're
experiencing right now, as we get adjusted to this
lively little devil! We never know what he's going to
be up to next. So many funny antics.

*Malteser*. (Dont think you have those *over there* - they're a round,
chocolate-covered, melt-in-mouth centred sweetie, sold in small bags, or
boxes.) If a female - how about *Valetta* (I can just hear the
derisory snorts...))) What colouring is he/she ????
Sorry, Sea - have just noticed he is a he!How about Cesare?
Im sure he'll be well-loved and won't mind what he's called.
.. Marg :o)
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks for the suggestions, Marg. And thanks for
explaining what Maltesers are. I didn't know.
Yes, Teaser would be a great name because
this little doggie is a great teaser. He gets through
any barrier we put up to keep him in the kitchen and
he keeps us running after him to see what he's up to.
We've decided to name him Romeo. As for his coloring,
he's all white. See the pics at:

He really is a little beauty Sea ,had a look at your other one too he was
lovely ;-))

Thanks, Val. That's a great webpage for dogs' names.
I got the idea for the name "Romeo" from the following webpage:

LOL ! Oreste! I need a rest! (Our new dog is really keeping us busy.)
We've decided to call him Romeo. He truly is a lover.
He loves to sit on my lap. The only way I get any rest since
we got him, is to lie on the recliner with him sleeping on top of me.
He cries when we leave him by himself.

It's a mistake to think the Maltese people are Italian. Although there is
~~seadancer~~...
|
Yes, Mike, I'm finding that out.
|
an Italian influence, being so close to Sicily, there is just as much
Arabic influence, especially in their language. I found it a very difficult
language to learn because of that - so many Ks, Xs, Qs and Zs in many of
the words
Of course nearly everyone speaks English so that was very useful ;-)
I'd love to go back to see how much it has changed since I was last there

and hopefully i wouldnt fall down the custom strps this time LOL

in 1966.
John the R-T...
|
Not a lot. We went there in 1986. (My 5th visit). Still looks as
though they can't remember if they are building a house or demolishing
it. The doss houses on the waterfront in Valetta harbour have all
been converted. Otherwise things look very much the same.
|
~~seadancer~~...
|
I didn't realize there was so much Arabic influence in Malta.
To tell you the truth, I knew very little about Malta. At least
now I know exactly where it is. (g)
|
Jeff Gaines...
|
I had several holidays there in the late 1970's - they were starting to
think about clearing away the rubble and starting to re-build then, don't
know if they'll have got round to it just yet...

|
Old Grizzly...
|
But they all seem to be Italian names? or you could try here LOL
~~seadancer~~...
|
Yes, but the list is so long, one can't quite focus.
I like the list of most popular names at:
If we had gotten a female, I was planning to call her "Lucy"
which turns out to be one of the most popular names for a dog.
