frogman...
Thanks FN, just kicked in here too :-)

10-30.

gentlegreen...
Oh what fun - why do we need this ?

Jeff Gaines...
Welcome to the group :-)

This is a tradition of this group, if you lurk for a while you may
learn some other traditions.

I suppose this may be of some use to people who can't be arsed to keep the
holes in Windoze properly patched or who can't resist clicking on silly
stuff that comes attached to email - but better wait 48 hours for this
release to catch up with new virus variants.

Jeff Gaines...
It always puzzles me why people who have enough confidence in Windows
to use it then refer to it as Windoze, I'd be interested to know why
you do?

gentlegreen...
Just begrudging affection - begrudging in that I acknowledge my own
conservatism in being way too lazy to muck about with anything other than
the latest Microsoft product - albeit frequently configured in "classic"
mode - which, so long as it's kept patched tends to do more or less what it
says on the can .. and its inefficiency is adequately compensated for by the
hardware improvements that accompany each new release.

Jeff Gaines...
That's my biggest moan, 10% smaller and 5% quicker would be a good
target for the MS programmers :-)

I'm a little wary of emails I receive stamped with "scanned by AVG" - not
only because it's the sort of thing I would be bound to include were I in
the business of writing email-propogated viruses, but also in the way that,
as a 2 wheeled road user I am wary of people who protect themselves by
driving 4 x 4s in town (which are the "new Volvos" in this context).

I rarely get to see viruses in the wild - largely by virtue of avoiding
having my email address in the address books of the sort of person who
"clicks on things" ... and the few I have seen recently ... presumably due
to their use of "polymorphic wrappers" et al., were unknown to several
leading AV programs for up to several days.

I frequently have arguments with folks who assure me that I merely have to
visit this or that website using Microsoft products - rather than Firefox /
Linux etc.. to get infected, but I have yet to encounter any situation where
user intervention was not required.

I notice that "security s/ware bundles" are now being marketed on the basis
of the facility to cover up traces of surfing the dodgier parts of the 'net

Jeff Gaines...
I don't think this group qualifies as a dodgy part of the 'net,
generally well behaved, mature and intelligent. It is, obviously, open
to all though.
