Grrr!!!!
I'm not sure what has happened but normally my homepage is web-search
.Australia.
Now it is Firefox ( which I use).
Half of my bookmarks have disappeared as well!!!
Some *very* important ones!!
I've done a system restore to no avail.
My backups are onto an external hard drive but it is only My Documents and
My Pictures I save automatically.
Tickettyboo...
|
Bummer :-(
Can't help you get them back, but if you automatically save your My Docs,
the why not keep your Favourites in there?
Tickettyboo...
|
PS !
I dunno if that does the same thing if you use Firefox, cos I know nowt
about it..sowwy!
PPS... I am still on the side of Little Tyke If you give her her own
account on the pc she can have her own favourites and lose them instead of
Dad's lol
|
Nothing techy involved, just find where your Favourites are currently
stored ( they have a star as the folder icon) and right click and drag the
folder to the root or top level of your My Docs. Leave go of the mouse
button and choose 'move here'
Windows remembers where you bunged it and then uses it in the new
location.
Now when you back up, they will be saved too.
|
Grr!!!!!
Charlie Drake...
|
You didn't say which Fx version you're using. If you're using the 1.5.x
series, then this version keeps a backup of your bookmarks.
pmj...
|
That's what I thought - so I mentioned that as well.
Nice to have it confirmed.
:-)
|
Look under your profile for a directory called Favorites and there will
be various previous versions kept there. Take a look there and see what
you come up with. The path for mine is:
D:\Documents and Settings\Charlie Drake\Favorites
pmj...
|
But isn't that the (Default) Path for the *Internet Explorer*
Favorites Folder?
Charlie Drake...
|
Yes sorry, I defaulted my backup to there using the method you describe
later in your post. I did this to belt and braces my bookmarks by using
MozBackup for Fx and TB and then Nero backup for all my docs and settings.
pmj...
|
Yep, it definitely makes sense for most people to have their
Bookmarks File (& Internet Explorer Favorites Folder) stored
somewhere in their "My Documents" Folder, but both IE
& Mozilla/Firefox choose to *not* have them there by Default!
:-(
I think that's silly & causes people no end of probs, when they
lose their Bookmarks & Favorites due to some prob.
many people *do* keep backups of stuff that's in their "My Documents"
Folder, but not stuff that is stored elsewhere, such as the Bookmarks
File, IE favorites Folder & the WAB - windoze Address Book - File
|
In the FF address bar type in about:config and look for this entry:
browser.bookmarks.file
pmj...
|
I did have a look in the "about:config" Page, (assuming it would
be Set in there) but "browser.bookmarks.file" Entry isn't in there,
on the Installation I looked at.
|
Double click on it and change the directory of where the bookmarks
file is located.
pmj...
|
Or RightClick & choose "New>String" ?
To Create an Entry, which should tell it where to look?
But then you'd still need to Copy/Move the existing Bookmark.html
File to that place I presume?
|
If you don't have that line, then click on any entry, right click and
select 'New' 'String'. In the first box enter the line above, and in the
second the location. You may have to restart FF for this to work.
pmj...
|
Ah right!
:-)
I was replying "Inline", before having read the whole of your Post!
:-)
& you can also Add the Entry directly to the "prefs.js" File (in the
Mozilla Profile Folder).
|
pmj...
|
& what does it do with the *existing* Bookmark.html File?
Does it Move/Copy it for you?
|
You can use this if you want different ID's to share the same bookmarks
pmj...
|
Good idea!
Same as you can with the Internet Explorer Favorites Folder
But with IE there's *also* an "All Users" Favorites Folder, which
is AutoMagically used by all the different User Profiles, as well
as (merged with) their own Favorites Folder, to Display in the Browser.
I assume that there's also a way to do that in Firefox?
It seems to have *loads* of Options for people to Fiddle around
with & do all sorts of things!
Endless possibilities to make all kinds of different bits of it
Brokted!
:-)

file bookmarks file
|
The IE favorites Folder contains the .URL (Internet Shortcut) Files
(& Sub-Folders containing further Shortcuts &/or more Sub-Folders)
Firefox keeps its Bookmarks in a single File called "Bookmark.html"
& that (by Default) is in a Sub-Folder (with a Randomly generated name)
in the *Application Data* Folder in the windoze Profile Folder for your
UserName (which is normally in the Documents & Settings Folder)
So the Path to it is normally something like...
{windoze Drive Letter}:\Documents and Settings\{UserName}\
\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles{8RandomCharacters.default}\bookmarks.html
& there's a bookmarks.bak File in there as well
Also, there's a Sub-Folder there, called bookmarkbackups
& that Folder contains several Backups of the bookmark.html File,
with the Date when it was made appended to the FileName in the Format
yyy-mm-dd, so they show up Sorted in (Date) order properly, even when
the View is Sorted by FileName.
You can find your Mozilla/Firefox Profile Folder (in other words,
Open it up straight away) very easily from the Start>Run Box...
Start>Run %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ [OK]
All of those Locations (for both Firefox & Internet Explorer can
be changed, if you want, though many people will just be using the
Default Locations
The Name of the Actual Path to the Firefox Profiles is stored in
the File called Profiles.ini which is in the Firefox Folder
Entering about:config into the Firefox AddressBar will also bring up
a Page of lots of useful & interesting(?) Information, which you
can Edit to suit your Preferences, if you want.
& you can (normally) access your (Internet Explorer) Favorites Folder
(wherever you have chosen to Store it), by using
Start>Run favorites [OK]
But there is a (very easy) way to get to it (without Fail, regardless
of where it is)...
Just use (from within Internet Explorer)
SHIFT+Organize Favorites
In other words, Go to the Favorites Menu, then Hold down the SHIFT
Key & Select "Organize Favorites..." From the Menu, while Holding
the SHIFT Key down.
That Opens up a windoze Explorer View of the Favorites Folder.
You can also Export your Internet Explorer Favorites to a
bookmark.htm(l) File, so Firefox/Mozilla can use them...
Menu>File>Import & Export>Next>Export Favorites
or you can get Firefox/Mozilla to Import them from the IE Favorites
Folder.

Now searching the web like mad to find certain sites again.
Tyke...
|
Thanks for all the help :-)
I did a search on the pc and found that Firefox makes a daily backup of
bookmarks :-)
It is a web site - but that (containing my bookmarks) is now in My
Bookmarks.
Ali...
|
It's an html page, not a web site, and calling it by the wrong name could,
one day, cause a lot of confusion and time wasting.
Web sites, generally, contain several html pages, plus images and sounds and
other kinds of documents, and are on 'The Web'
Sorry, but I have spent so much time answering what turned out to be the
wrong question.
|
LOL
I'm on Ver 1.5.0.1
|
I've enough to do at the moment as we are snowed under with orders.
BTW
Little Tyke was on this pc for ages last
night.............................Hmmmmm????
Tickettyboo...

aww, if she brokted it , it would have been a mistake...one anyone could
have made.
