Does Zone Alarm slow you down?

Ali...
A number of posters in ntl.discussion.broadband.cm (which is supposed to be
restricted to ntl subscribers but sometimes leaks to web-search et al.), being
newly upgraded 4Meg whooshers have discovered that recent versions of Zone
Alarm restrict them to around 2.8Mbps.

This may be relevant to up-to-8-Meg ADSL subscribers too.

Tried it without ZA running Ali - doesn't appear to be affecting my speeds.

Ali,
I've used a paid for version of Zone Alarm for three years now and I
haven't noticed that as an issue. I did have a problem with some

Ali...
How much of that time have you had better than 3Mbps? But anyway it's only
fairly recent releases showing the problem.

mothy...
I get between 3.5 mbps and 5.5 mbps and I never go below 3 mbps except
when I fiddled with my MTU / RWin settings.

individual web sites at one time but this seemed to get programmed out
with one of the updates.

Most of the speed problems seem to come from ISP and the Wholesaler
communication plus local issues. I've now started to fiddle with my MTU
/ RWin settings to see if I can drag out any more speed. I've managed to
slow it down on one occasion and I've now upped the speed a tad. I
really need to play late on.

Of course individual settings in Zone Alarm could be causing a problem
but that is down to user fiddling not the application per se.

I'm just reporting what has been said. Quite a number a reporting that

mothy...
Yes I appreciate that.

Quite a number a reporting that

without ZA they are getting the full 4Mbps, with it, even as a clean install,
they are getting 2.8Mbps.

mothy...
I've just tested my download speed with and without ZA.
With ZA I got 5590 mbps down and 371 mbps up
Without ZA I got 5420 mbps and 378 mbps up

So no real difference really.

In this case, there should be no ISP/Wholesaler communication problems, as
NTL own the whole lot, from the cable modems, through the local loop (optic
fibre), backbone, and a range of servers.

Point taken

I'm still on 1Mbps, so it doesn't concern me.

Your turn will come. :-)
