Pam the goose...
Just been to the shops.
It's 33.5°c out there.
Ray translates that to me as 92.3 in real temp!
And that's at 4 o'clock in the afternoon! Can you understand why Meg is
tucked up indoors with the ceiling fan and my new fan keeping her cool.

I'm sure this is how the weather was in my childhood:)

Rabbit...
Eggsactly. I remember summers as starting in May/June and being like this

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Well I can remember one very hot one - around 1959 or 1960.

Rabbit...
1976 was a scorcher, I remember that one well 'cos we had to decamp from the
beach in Blackpool and head for Stanley Park to keep cool. As a child though
I used to spend a lot of time in the summer paddling, catching minnows in
jam jars and having concerts in back gardens and it was always warm.

Pam the goose...
Yes, as a child I was only in for meals and bedtime during the school
holidays and wore minimum clothing all through the summer hols. We seem to
have got back to how it used to be:))

The weatherman on Look North was discussing the 1976 summer earlier today.
He said if you take the daily highest temperatures for July in 1976 and w*rk
out the average, it is 2°C lower than for this July. Thing is that it's

Statistics, statistics and D***ed lies, can prove anything you want :-)

Ali...
Of course, what do you want to prove.

An excellent book which I read back in the 60s.

really remembered because the heatwave lasted for about 3 months and
standpipes were deployed in several counties.

May...
--------

May...
favourite to take our younger ones in the 70's, as well as just us Two
Codgers only 8 or 9 years ago... I well remember the 1976
heatwave..M-in-Law staying with us indignantly described it as "ridiculous".
That was the year I thoughtlessly rested myself (briefly) on the
metal-lidded dustbin... soon shot up !!

Baldrick...
I was in the army in 1976 and went home on leave for a couple of weeks in
June, (just before the start of the heatwave), I went to the cinema with a
few friends and while we were in the queue outside, it snowed ! I wasn't
in Iceland, or Norway, or even Scotland, (where I've seen it snow many times
in June), I was in Bedford ! Three days after that, the heatwave
started and two weeks after going back after my leave, I was on duty on
Salisbury Plain on fire watch - Don't yer just love our weather ? :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
He wasn't trying to prove anything - just saying that so far in July 2006
it's been hotter in Yorkshire than it was in July 1976. I'd say his
argument adequately showed it to be the case. Of course if we have snow,
ice and glaciers starting to form in the next couple of weeks then that
wouldn't be the case, would it?.

till September.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Started to cool down here. Only 30.0°C ((86°F) out there now. Looks like
the heat wave is over. :)
