Tell them that they are breaching the DPA. That could be enough to frighten
them off but if it doesn't then see

Plan B. Buy a high pitched whistle, answer the phone to that number and blow
the whistle ;-)

Calls such as this are very frustrating.
Our business line in the office gets a lot of calls from foreign people
trying to sell cheaper phonelines/plans etc.
I put them on hold - sometimes with the speakerphone on so they can listen
to the hard jbex they are disrupting.
My record is keeping someone on for 10.5 minutes - kept going back and
asking if they minded holding.

the time when I answer there is no one there, twice I could hear people
laughing and talking but no one would speak to me. Then finally a Scottish

lady asked for hubby, said she was from the Gas Board. I told her he wasn't
in and that when they had been ringing a few months ago he wasn't interested
in a new boiler. Anyway calls kept coming -3 more (no one there) until last
night. So I got hubby who told them that we were on TPS. She said that
didn't matter as we were customers. So he was rude to her and put the phone
down. This pm another call same number - an Indian gentleman this time. So I
told him not interested. Decided to try to get BT to block calls from that
number. After the usual palaver of press this and that, after 20 mins on
hold an Indian lady. Didn't understand me - thought I wanted to order a
telephone directory -. Put me on hold and then said it cost £10.07 a quarter
to have a refuse calls package and she had ordered it for me. My blood
pressure now sky high said "Well you can unorder it, I am not paying £10 to
block a number." So no better off. Cringe now when phone rings. What with
that and the flaming Mori Poll people who also say they do not have to
adhere to TPS. Sorry for rant

I have a caller ID display 'phone Shaz - That way I can select which calls
to accept. If it's number witheld I don't answer and similar if it's a
number I don't recognise. If it's important the caller will usually leave a

Unfortunately that is true. TPS only applies to firms trying to sell
you something. Not market research.
A phone with caller display is the way to go. Caller display is free
with BT Privacy at home. Also free.
