I have an intermittant fault that sometimes prevents me connecting to the
internet and outlook express.
The DSL light flashes and when it flashes there is no way I can get
connected. Right now the light is solid and everything is OK. I got a filter
online that BT supplied. I am running an extension lead upstairs from the
hallway into my office and the filter is connected directly to the socket in
my office. At the moment I am running a phone/Fax machine and a credit card
terminal from the socket with no problem.
Do you think I would benifit from a stronger filter and if so is there such
a thing available ?
Here is the set up:
Phone line comes into the house via the dining room outside wall where I
have a phone socket and a phone. There is also a BT filter on this socket.
There is a further phone socket in the hallway and it is from this socket
that I have run an extension line upstairs into my office where it
terminates into another socket. Filter is fitted here also. From this socket
I run my modem - a fax/ phone and a credit card terminal.
when the fault occurs - I have tried disconnecting everything except the
modem but it makes no difference.
Also whenever the fault id present is is accompanied by a noisy line. The
only thing I havnt changed is the extension line.

Get the line checked by your telecommunications supplier first. If it is noisy it
could cause this problem. It could indicate a line contact (battery) or bad
connection (HR).
These problems can happen intermittently, but will probably get worse.
Once you get that checked, you can then isolate other problems.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

BT recommend plugging your DSL modem directly into the master socket, and
also, not to use an extension.

Unfortunatly Pete
I cannot move the office down the stairs.
Thanks for your help though...

For several days I had my router powered up and connecte to the main phone
socket using a long mains extension lead and connected to the computer via a
10 metre long ethernet lead - what a drag - In my case it didn't make any

Yes, it is a bit of a drag!...
But you do need to Connect the Modem/Router directly to the Master
Socket, so as to establish whether (or not) the (Phone) Extension
or anything else that's Plugged in is (or isn't) the cause of (or
contributing to) the probs.

Which meant that it had the desired effect!
& that the fault was somewhere in the BT Line, (or Exchnage),
so they could then trace it & make it Fixted.

difference though. So I've now got an almost unused 10 long ethernet lead
which I most likely (and hopefully won't need any more.

It will always come in handy for something else.
Maybe you might (at some point) want to have the other PC Connected
up, but not have it right next to the existing PC, (or in the same
room) as it is at the moment?

Since I acquired a 'surplus to requirements' long ethernet cable, I have
been able to position my computer in the most convenient position (which
varies with season), without worrying about positioning the cable modem.

Or a makeshift washing line over the bath when the weather isn't conducive
to drying outside. :)

Been there umpteen times in the last 5 weeks with my BB download speed
problem. Eventually the fault - in the local exchange - was rectified. My
extension lead don't make a jot of difference.
