Bram...
Ooh. Ooh you've loads of stuff to read yet.

Aries...
I know, still in the kindergarten I am LOL
Several people have been mentioning trying out a Version of Linux
(or similar) Operating System.

pmj...

You can get (on many Magazine Cover Disks) a "Live CD", which you
can Boot up off, which allows you to try it out, without having
to actually Install it - though they can often be Installed on the
Hard Disk as well, (if you want), but that would Involve Partitioning
the Hard Disk.

There are lots of Websites that offer Downloadable ISO Images of
"Live CDs" as well.

Here's one with a good list of them...

Aries...
Thanks for that :)

pmj...
How many of them have you Downloaded & tried so far then?
:-)

Aries...
Downloading Slax now (Tuesday) Just for a look see mind :)

Aries...
and Knoppix to a cd on the desktop ;)

Aries...
None yet - but I will do LOL

Bram...
Me too :-)

Aries...
Mind boggling innit - turning grey fast LOL

Bram...
and that's before you've read these two pdfs for Mandrake!
lol

Warning large PDFs. Save them to my Documents and have a good read.

Aries...
Saved to My Docs, thanks a bunch Bram :)

Bram...
I'd read the starter first. Well I did actually. Don't scare yourself too
much with the command line one. Read little bits at a time and go for a lie
down every now and again lol

Aries...
LOL, I'll do me best to understand it - let you know :)

pmj...
LOL!

*Now* we know why you wanted that huge, great big extra Hard
Disk Drive!!!

It's to Save all those ISO CD Images & .PDF Files onto!
:-)

But seriously...
How much Space on that Drive (or the one in your PC) have you
actually used?

A few .PDF Files won't actually take up all that much room.

& you can fit about between 300 or 500 typical ISO CD Rom Images
on a 250 GB Hard Disk!
:-)

That will keep you busy, for a while!!!

Once you've Downloaded them.

& - with a 2mbps ADSL Internet Connection, (with a typical Download
Speed of about 250 KBytes/Sec) it will only take you about 12 Days
(Solid! - Continuous!) to Download enough stuff to Fill it up!
:-)

Here are a few rough, approximate figures, to give you an indication...

250 GB x 1024 = 256,000 MB
2mbps = (approx) 250 Kilobytes/Sec
Which is (about, assuming a good, reliable Server to Download from,
under ideal conditions), 4 Seconds per MegaByte, so...

256000 MB x 4 = 1,024,000 Seconds
102400 Sec / 60 = (about) 1,7067 Minutes
17067 Min / 60 = (approx) 284 hours
284 Hr / 24 = (roughly) 11.85 days

:-)
So - in a fortnight, you'll be needing another new Hard Disk!!!
Does your Internet Connection have any Caps or Limits on the
Bandwidth (Data Transfer) ?

If they charge, say 1.50 per GB, (over & above the (typical) 3 GB
Monthly Allowance), then it will only cost you about 375 Quid to
Fill up that 250 GB Hard Disk in a fortnight!
That's if you're prepared (& able) to leave your Internet Connection

Aries...
doh, silly man LOL

on, Downloading non-stop, 24 Hours per Day

LOL!
:-)

Bram...
Nice. That will keep me busy for a while :-)
