Hawkeye23...
Following the threads a few days ago about gmail I took up one of the
kind invitations offered in this group annd opened an account of my
own.
All went well in that Igot an account/email address and can access it
ok via my IE browser.
I then tried to access the gmail account via OE as described by pmj in
the earlier thread. In IE I accessed 'Settings' annd then 'Forwarding
and POP' and followed the instructions there. This did result in an

Yep, you have to Access your GMail Accoun t(via the *Web*,
to Enable the Option to allow Collection of Mail using the POP3
Protocol, (which is what normal eMail Clients, such as OutLook
Express & Thunderbird etc, use) & then you *also* have to Set up
an Account in OutLook Express (& then also go to the Account
Properties in OE & Specify the right Port Number (995) that GMail
uses, cos GMai luses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).

extra Account in OE with the settings that the 'Forwarding and POP'
instructions said it should have (in the manual settings bit).
However when I tried to access the gmail email account - along with my
'normal' email accounts - by either starting up OE or by pressing
'Send/Receive' - the normal accounts work as usual but the gmail
account doesn't and throws up an error message. It is as follows.
Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication.

pmj...
That's the prob.

You have Enabled the SPA (Secure PassWord Authentication) Option
in the Account Properties (on the Servers Tab) & yo ushouldn't have.
You need to Enable SSL (Secure Sockets Layer - Port 995) on the
"Advanced" Tab (which you have done, as we can see from the rest of
the Error Message Details) & not SPA (which is on the "Servers" Tab)

Account: 'xxxxxxxx@gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR not supported p45pf9581894nfa', Port:
995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:

Those 2 are correct.

It's the SPA which is wrong.

pmj...
You can look up those Error Codes on the M$KB Site - here's an
Article that lists them...

0x800CCC90 POP3_RESPONSE_ERROR Client response invalid.
0x800CCC18 SICILY_LOGON_FAILED Logon attempt failed.

Both of which indicate that that your eMail Client is sending the
wrong stuff to the Mail Server, whwen it tries to Log in ("Sicily"
refers to the fact that you are using SPA (Secure PassWord
Authentication)

0x800CCC18
I imagine this is because I have made some error in setting it up -

pmj...
Yep.
See above.

UnTick the SPA Option (but leave the SSL - Port 995 Setting)

& have another look at the GMail Help Pages on their Site (as Posted
by myself in my previous Message & Arthur Ascii, also in this Thread) -
they show you what Settings to use.

but unaccustomed as I am to the ways of gmail - for the life of me I
cannot see what it is.

pmj...
GMail isn't the only Mail Service that uses SSL (Port 995).
Various other Independent, 3rd Party Mail Services do as well
(though most normal ISP type eMail Accounts don't)

I am hoping therefore for some help and advice from my friends in UPS.

pmj...
See above!
:-)

Some background info which may be relevant. This is all happening in
W98SE (though I have XPH on a second HDD/partition).
My connection is BB via a Router/NIC.
All comments/advice gratefully received.Many thanks.

pmj...
In this case, the particular Operating System you are using doesn't
matter - it's the *Mail Client* Settings that matter (& OutLook Express
works pretty much the same & has the same sort of Options in w98 as
it does in WinXP)

& the same goes for the Internet Connection & Router etc.

The method of Internet Connection won't affect things (even the
Firewall in the Router won't affect things, cos POP3 uses *Outbound*
TCP/IP Connections to Access the Mail Server & Fetch the Mail
& OutBound stuff isn't usually Filtered in a Router Firewall.

I was lazy and used the gmail auto setup thingy, all I had to in OE was
put in the password :-)

Jackie...
I did the same WO, easy peasy!!

Old Grizzly...
where do you find that?

Help is your friend

pmj...
I *think* (from what Hawkeye23 Posted) that he also used that
"Auto Setup" thingy?

But anyway, any "Auto" thing just bungs in the Settings into the
OutLook Express Account Properties, which you can very quickly
& easily do yourself.

It's always a good idea to check (& to know how to check)
& to change (if necessary) the Account Properties.
Cos if they aren't Set right, then it won't work.

All these "Auto" type things are all well & good, but if you aren't
aware of what they are doing (& why), then you can often run into probs,
if for some reason it doesn't work as expected.

Arthur Ascii...
GMail uses SSL security on port 995 so you need to set your OE to logon
that way. I'm a Thunderbird user so I would suggest looking here:
