Multiboot email conundrum

Hawkeye23...
I wonder if yesterday's Birthday Boy might be interested in a techie
conundrum as a change from all those Birthday Greetings.

pmj...
Yep!
:-)

I spent today (well, part of the afternoon) sorting out a Laptop PC
that someone I know had just got back from the manufacturer, after
having had the hard Disk Drive in it fail.

It came back completely wiped, with a Fresh Factory OEM Installation
of WinXP on it, so we had to do all the Setting up of it & get it
Connected to her WiFi Router & Set the eMail Accounts in OE up
on it (moving the AddressBook & Store Root Folders etc,) & Setting
up the windoze & Internet Explorer Options up on it.

Advice from non-birthday boys and girls would be equally welcome.
Techies will perhaps recall the long running saga of my multi boot
faffing over the last few months and various threads which did
eventually end up with a multiboot arrangement involving W98SE and
XPHome.

pmj...
Yep!
:-)

& a couple of other people have also been doing similar things as well.
We have all had some fun!
:-)
& learned some useful stuff along the way.
:-)

In a recent attempt to actually do something with XP I fiddled with
email. Each OS has its own version of Outlook Express.W98SE has
OE6 6.00.2800.1123 and XPH has OE6 6.00.2900.2180(xpsp_sp2).
My aim was to get all emails sent/received visible in both versions
and an ability to send/receive emails from either version.

pmj...
Yep, that's a perfectly reasonable (& sensible!) thing to want
(& expect!) to be able to do!
:-)

But (as you have found it can sometimes be a bit of a "Faff" to sort
out (especially the first of those requirements - having both Sent
& received emails Visible in *both* the Installations)...

I eventually achieved the first bit (common visibility) by pointing
the XP OE to the folder in the W98SE partition where the W98SE email
folders were. However senile dementia prevents me remembering exactly

pmj...
Yep, that's the way to do it!
:-)

how I did that.Never mind for the moment.I can see an identical set of

pmj...
In OE, Menu>Tools>Options...>Maintenance
[Store Folder...]
[Change...]
[Browse for Folder]
[OK] [OK] [OK]

emails in both versions of OE and whichever one I use to

pmj...
Great!

update/send/receive emails I can then see them in both inboxes/sent

pmj...
Great!

Yo uwill also, normally need to Set the Option in the Properties
of each (& all) of the eMail Accounts Properties (in *both*
Installations) to...

[/] Leave a Copy of Messages on Server

That way, it ensures that each Installation (& any other Machine
that you use to check the Server/Mailbox from) won't wipe the New
messages off (which it would by Default), so he otehr Machines can
get them when *they* check for Mail.

The UIDL ("Unique ID Listing") of which Messages have been Fetched
is stored by OutLook Express in the Store Root Folder, in a File
called POP3UIDL.dbx (along with the Messages themselves, in the variosu
other .DBX Files)

items.
The problem/conundrum arises when I try to send emails from the XPH
version of OE.It seems to work ok in that you type it out - press
send- and it goes in and out of the outbox and ends up in the Sent

pmj...
So that would *seem* to indicate that the message *has* been Sent OK?
if it hadn't been, (Sent to & Accepted by the Outgoing Mail Server
OK,)then it would still be in the "OutBox" Folder & not in the "Sent
Items" Folder.

The SMTP Log File will confirm exactly what happens to the Mails,
when OE tries to Send them.
^ the POP3 Log will tell you what happens when OE tries to *Receive*
the Mails...

Items folder. There are no error messages and nothing bounces back
saying can't send etc.The problem is that the recipient doesn't get

pmj...
Can you have a look in the SMTP (& POP3) Logs & see what it says?
The SMTP & POP3 Log isn't Enabled by Default.

Use (in OE)...

Menu>Tools>Options...>Maintenance
TroubleShooting ---
[/] Mail [/] News [/] IMAP [/] HTTP

Then try Sending (& Receiving)
On Both Machines (&/or Both Installations)

Then look in the SMTP Log & the POP3 Log Files, which you will find
in the Store Root Folder (see above for locating that), if you
can't remember where it is or how to Find it.

the email. At least most of the time.I have sent 4 emails to the same

pmj...
Weird!
But teh Logs will Help establish what's going on.

recipient and 3 have not turned up but one has.I have sent a similar
number to the same recipient from the W98SE OE and all arrive ok.

pmj...
OK, look in the SMTP (& POP3) Log Files (for both Installations...
That will show you what's hapopening that's different.

What do you make of that.As far as I can see the mail account is set

pmj...
See above.
:-)

up the same in both versions of OE - though what subtle differences
may lurk beneath the surface.

pmj...
Many!
But they can all be sussed out!
:-)

The one difference I now notice is that the XP OE is set to send mail
in html (must be default) whereas W98SE is set to send txt on UPS

pmj...
Yep.
You will need to change that to Set it to Send Mail in Plain Text.

advice.I have not changed it for fear of complicating matters further.

pmj...
Nope.
Havin gMail Sent in Plain Text makes it *much* easie3r to suss out
any probs.

I await help and advice as to what to try. Many thanks in advance.

pmj...
See above.

PS I am on broadband via a router/NIC.

pmj...
What Broadband Service Provider do you use?
& is it ADSL or Cable Modem?
Sorry I can't remember.

I'm sure we would have asked before & you have told us, but can
you remind us?

That *may* have a bearing on what's happening.
(since you are prolly using the SMTP Server that your ISP provides.

But, more importantly, what is the POP3 Server that you are Sending
the Mail(s) to (& that you are Receiving the Mails from)?

Have you Sent any of these "test" Mails that have failed to get
through to your *own* Account (POP3 Mailbox) ?
Or only to someone else's (some other?) Account?
