Just booted up both m/cs and there is a monitor fault. I have a picture
but it is only ½ width and centrally positioned. I had actually had the
monitor switched off by it's on off switch - which is something I don't
usually do. Anyhow when I switched id on first time - there was no display
at all, but that appeared after using the on/off switch to switch off then
on again. Any ideas? There doesn't appear to be any other distortion
apart from the horizontal size.

pmj...
Most Monitors have various Settings on them (usually operated using
a Dial or Buttons &/or an "OSD" - On Screen Display Menu thingy),
which is completely separate from & independent from the *PC*
Desktop & Display Settings

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
I checked those but even with the horizontal - size set at maximum the
display was only ½ width.

They also (often, though not always) have some kind of Memory, so that
they remember the Settings for any given Resolution Set on the PC(s).

It says in the manual that there is a memory which can store up to 18
different display modes, 8 of which are factory prest modes.

That way, you can switch between PCs (&/or Graphics Display Cards
or Resolution Settings on a PC) & it (the Monitor) will Switch to
the relevant Settings for that PC/Display Card.

Have a look in the Instruction Manual for the Monitor, to see how to
Set the actual Monitor Settings (as opposed to the PC Graphics Card
&/or Desktop/Display Settings) & have a look to see how to ReSet it

It does say that you can retrieve a factory preset mode by selecting the
RECALL menu.

This morning when I switched on the display was again back to ½ horizontal
size, but when I switched from one computer to the other ther screen went
blank - until I used the Power switch to switch OFF then ON again. Anyhow I
read your post and got out the manual to peruse. Took it downstairs for
about 30 minutes, and when I returned here the full width display had
returned for both pooter displays.
Next time I boot up, if I still have ½ width display I'll check and see
what the RECALL setting does. It almost seems like the monitor doesn't like
these cold nights and needs to warm up after switching on.

BoyPete...
R.I.P. Monitor :(

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
I thought that too. Funny thing is, when turn off one of the computers in
the usual way the display size clicks back to normal just before it turns

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
And just after I posted the above it returned to normal and - touch wood,
and all digits crossed, is still there.
Curiouser and curiouser Alice. :)

off.

andon...

Put the pooter on hibernate whilst I was dining and watching the footie.
When I came back and restarted it, back to ½ width display after several
Power switch presses. Couldn't get to reset anything, so thought I'd just
leave it and carry on looking at posts through squinty eyes. After about
10 minutes there was a strange noise from the monitor and the full width
display returned for about 10 seconds and then reverted to ½ width. A
couple of minutes later the noise sounded again - for a couple of seconds -
returned to full width display but was accompanied by the smell of hot
circuit board. That's now gone and I still have full width display - but I
think somthing is getting hot in there. :( Funny that it appears to be
w*rking OK again though.
Have you checked that one of the m/c has not had it's display resolution

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
They both seem OK andon;
The XP m/c is at 1280 x 1024 and the 98 m/c is set to 1152 x 864. I've done
it that way so I can view the complete 98 m/c display on VNC through the XP
one.

Now I haven't switched off since it bacame OK again - so I suppose next time
I boot up it might be dodgy agai.

I was wondering whether the ON/OFF switch had anything to do with it,
since I've had two TVs in the past where the ON/OFF switch has done funny
things with the TV settings. As i said I don't usually touch that but just
leave it in the ON position and the monitor is operated by the pooters.

changed?
