Jeff Gaines...
I know some of or readers had some problems after their upgrades. There
has been a quite lengthy discussion about this in demon.service - Demon
are upgrading customers at the moment ( next month for me).

There is a consensus forming that with more people on faster connections
then contention is starting to bite and so people are seeing much slower
down-loads than they might have hoped for - even if they sync at much
higher speeds. Some are even getting slower down-load than before their
upgrades.

It seems fairly logical and might explain some of the issues that people

Well my speed plummet from around 2900 kbps to less than 240 kbps for 3
weeks was due to a physical connection error at the local exchange. After
that was found, and put right within minutes of being detected I'm back on
the 2900 kbps. Mind you it took BT some 3 weeks to actually find the
fault. Apparently their monitors told them a completely different story
from what was happening at my router. My router status page was reporting
that upload and download synch rate were 288 kbps and the latency was
interleaved. BT's equipment was showing my download synch rate was above
4000 kpbs, upload was 448 kbps and interleaving was switched off.
Obviously we weren't monitoring the same connection. It wasn't until a BT
engineer went to the local exchange and poked around that the wrong
connection was discovered.

The hard sell has also had an effect.
More people now have internet access than even 12 months ago and almost
all of them will be ADSL max and many of those with more than 1 computer
in the house.
I've noticed 4 additional wifi nets within 50 yards of my house where 6
months ago there were none.
Drive the 2 miles down the road from me into town and you pass almost a
dozen more. Several of which are un-encrypted.
12 months ago you would be lucky to have seen 1.

There is 1 pub in town where you can sit with a laptop or pda and surf
the net via an un-encrypted wifi net in the house across the road.
Very useful during pub quizzes :-)
