Flickr.com vs PictureTrail.com-'At the Park'

~~seadancer~~...
I've been experimenting with the free Flickr.com Photo
Website offered by Yahoo. I'm not sure I'm happy with
the way it operates. The pics are very small until you click
on the icon called "All Sizes" above each picture.
When the pics are enlarged they are beautiful but it's too
much trouble to enlarge each picture.
The slide-show pictures aren't very large and when the pics
are in slide-show mode, the titles and captions are omitted.
My Flickr.com photos are at:
The same photos can be seen at my other photo website:
See the album called "At the Park". No password needed.
I think you'll find PictureTrail much more satisfying.

BunnyHare...
I think I agree with you that the picturetrail shows the pictures
better. Also, it doesn't keep asking me to turn on ActiveX as it does

Thanks, Barb, for your reply. What is "ActiveX"?
Things are getting too complex for lay people like me. :)

pmj...
The "ActiveX" stuff that the Flickr.com Site (& also other, similar
Sites, such as web-search Maps etc,) use is actually not anything that needs
Downloading - it uses the *built-in* ActiveX Controls that Internet
explorer has available.

In the case of Flickr.com & web-search Maps, the ActiveX Control that is
used is the one that Creates the "XMLHTTPRequest" Object, which is
what is used by the Web Browser to Fetch the Content from the Web
Server, without having to ReFresh the Page.

It's perfectly Safe (unlike some other ActiveX Controls, which can be
Malicious), so if you don't want to have to keep Clicking[OK] at the
prompt (if you have your Security Settings Set to Prompt for ActiveX),
you can just put the Flickr.com (& Maps.web-search.com) Sites into the
"Trusted Sites" Zone in Internet Explorer.

That will then mean that it won't keep prompting you (on those Sites),
but you'll still be warned if any other Site tries to use ActiveX.

Go to...

Menu>Tools>Internet Options...>Security
Click the "Trusted Sites" Icon
Then Click [Sites...]
Type in the URL of the Site into the Text Entry Box & Click [Add]
(You will need to UnTick the Box [ ] Require Server verification
(HTTPS:) for all Sites in this Zone, if that is Ticked.

When you have Added the Sites that you want to put into the "Trusted
Sites" Zone, then Click [OK]

From then on, that mean that the Sites that are in the "Trusted Sites"
Zone will use the Security Settings for *that* Zone, rather than the
Default "Internet" Zone & the Default Settings for the "Trusted Sites"
Zone are to allow the use of the ActiveX Control that is needed for
the "XMLHTTPRequest" Object that those Sites use.

If you want to check to see (or alter) what Security Settings are Set
for that Zone, then just Click the [Custom Level...] Button & you can
see what's Set (& change anything that you want/need to change).

ActiveX is a (Proprietary) Technology invented by micro$oft which
allows WebSites to do all sorts of very powerful stuff on your
Machine...

It can be used for lots of useful stuff, such as on the Flickr.com
(& web-search Maps etc,) Sites, but it *can* (& is!) also be used for
Malicious purposes & is how very many SpyWare, AdWare, Trojans
& other MalWare gets Installed on peoples Machines, when they just
Allow all ActiveX Controls without careful consideration.

The ActiveX Controls that the Flickr.com & web-search Maps Site use
are OK (when used correctly), so if you want to Block other,
possibly Malicious uses of ActiveX Controls, but Allow them on
those Sites, Set ActiveX to "Disable" (or "Prompt") in the Internet
Zone, but then Add the Sites you want to Allow to use ActiveX to the
"Trusted Sites" Security Zone - see my Reply to Barb for more details
about how to do that.

But it's been fun learning the different system and figuring
out how it works. BTW, the pics were taken Sunday, April 2.

Love your picture trail Sea !!and no it's not too much trouble to click to
enlarge the piccs ;-)))))

brian...
Nice photos but they are all wider than my screen and I have to scroll
across to see the edges on picture trail

Can you change your monitor resolution Brian. Mine is set to 1280 x 1024 on

~~seadancer~~...
That's good to hear, FN! My laptop screen is so small
that I blamed it on the small screen.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I have a second m/c with W98, IE6 and a screen resolution of 1152 x 864.
That also doesn't need to scroll your piccies if the F11 key has been
pressed to minimise the toolbars and taskbar.

my 17" GNR TFT monitore and there is no need to scrollat all.

~~seadancer~~...
Yes, I agree, that's a downside. But it's a trade-off because
the larger pics are so much better, IMO. I was hoping that folks
with larger screens wouldn't have to scroll.
I do have an option to arrange the settings so that my PictureTrail
pics would show up smaller, but somehow I like big pics. (g)
BTW, on my laptop, I don't have to scroll much, just a tad.

I don't know if you use Firefox/Mozila etc., as a web browser
but if you do you can add
as a FREE extension.
It adds a function to the right-click to zoom */-
and fit to page. Works very fast too.
