Don't drive 4x4s in London

Vehicles causing the most pollution in central London are to face huge
increases in the congestion charge, mayor Ken Livingstone has
announced.
The daily charge for vehicles in carbon emissions band G - which
includes 4x4s - is to rise from £8 to £25 from 2009.

Perhaps Ministers should set an example and stop being chauffeured
around in gas-guzzling Jags that 'we' are paying for.

In 2008, the charge will be removed for cars in Bands A and B which
produce the lowest emissions, Mr Livingstone said.

But the AA said the new policy will not only hit 4x4s but also many
family cars, like people carriers.

So I wonder what they would have charged my husband. He used to have a
SWB Shogun which was converted to lpg.... for towing our caravan.

I wonder what I'll get charged? I have an AWD 2.0 Subaru but it's not
a gas-guzzler or a Chelsea Tractor, it just looks like an ordinary
family estate. We *need* this sort of car out here in the sticks. We
regularly get snowed in every year. I'm my blind Mum's carer (her not
me :') ) and need reliable transport, they don't think of any of
this,do they? There isn't any public transport near me apart from a
part-time bus and we have to walk a long way to the bus-stop (salt bin
not a bus stop).

So it's nothing to do with 'congestion' but just another money-making
scheme.

Rising £17 in 3 years time for someone who can afford to buy and run a
gas-guzzler doesn't sound much like a deterrent to me.

Yes, but they were saying (previously) that they are going to up the
tax on all 4x4's too. Am I classed as a 4x4 I wonder.
