I know I have Skype installed, + yahoo messenger, ( no voip on this
pc, the mike socket worketh not...) but there seem to others.
I'm especially confused re. all the different "messenger" services!

Well, there's (to mention just a few)...
ICQ
AOL AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
Yahoo IM (Yahoo Instant Messenger)
M$N Messenger
web-search Talk
Jabber
Those are the main IM (Instant Messenger) Services that are (& have
been) available - those all offer ordinary "Instant Messaging"
(Text Chat) as well as "Presence Management" - i.e. they show a List
of Contacts & their "OnLine Status" (that's if the Contacts choose to
show it)
& those (now) all also offer VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - for
Talking (as opposed to just Text Chat) &/or Video.
There are also other things, such as Skype, which is primarily
a VoIP thing, but also does Text Chat.
& it (Skype) can Call (& be called by) POTS - Plain Old Telephone
Service - Phones, both LandLine & Mobile, Local, National
& International. (but no 999/112 Emergency Calls)
& then there are various other (subscription based) VoIP things which
are either intended (manly) just to contact other Users of the same
Service, or (primarily) for Calling POTS Phones.
The main & biggest problem with *all* of the various IM &/or VoIP
Services is that most of them work only on a PC (but some are available
for Apple Mac & Linux) & none of the Service will Connect to - Call or
Receive Calls - from the other IM/VoIP Services.
& many of the ones which *are* available for both PC & Apple Mac
& Linux will only do *Text Chat* between the different Systems -
& won't do VoIP across the Systems.
Skype (& AOL AIM) seem to be the only ones that are not only
available for PC, Apple Mac & Linux, but will *also* do VoIP as
well between the different Operating Systems.
But neither Skype nor AOL AIM will work with any of the other
IM Services (& none of the other IM Services work with any of the
others, with the exception of web-search Talk, which interoperates with
any IM Services using the Jabber (XMPP - eXtensible Messaging
& Presence - Protocol)
AOL AIM will work with ICQ, cos AOL own ICQ, (but only for IM & not
for VoIP)
& Yahoo & M$N Messenger have announced that they will be able to
work together at some point, but again, I think that's only going to
be for IM & not VoIP.
So, basically, AOL AIM (including ICQ) has the largest number of
(World Wide) Users, (for IM), closely followed by M$N Messenger
& then Yahoo IM.
But when it comes to VoIP, (as opposed to mainly IM), then I think
you'll find that Skype has the largest number of Users & is also
available for (& works between) different Operating Systems, such
as Apple Mac & Linux as well as PC/windoze.
& it's being marketed for use by people who want to talk to people
who are using other (ordinary) Phones as well as other Skype Users.

As you have already found out yes it was I, however I was unaware the
invites were being sent out by just adding Friends to my list but it
seems they have and you are quite welcome to join the fun :-)
