Can any one help me, with this rather trivial matter that is annoying me?
On certain file associations in my PC some will not associate to a program.
When the Open with file comes up the small box where it says 'Always open
with this kind of file' it will not let me tick the small box at the bottom
of it. Is there a setting some where that's stopping this doing this?

Is this using WinXP?
Or WinMe?
Or w98?
All of them use a basically similar way of handling things, but they
all differ slightly in what features are available & how to get to the
various choices.

Which file type causes the issue? I had a check and couldn't find a
type where the box is disabled.

Good point!!!
There *are* some though, so yes, it will really depend on what
particular File Extension uker is talking about.
It will be interesting to see which File Extension(s) he is having
this prob with?
What Choices are available depends on what is Set in the Registry.
In the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Key (Which is actually an Alias for the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes), there are Sub-Keys for each File
Extension & *also* for each File Type - a FileType can be Associated
with more than one File Extension.
There are also various other SubKeys, for things such as "All File
Extensions" (*) & Unknown File Types, as well as various other File
System Objects.
The Contents of those SubKeys can have a whole range of different
Values (& further SubKeys), which decides what Options are (or are not)
available in the various Dialog Boxes.
In particular the "EditFlags" Value controls what Tick Boxes are
available (or Greyed out) (& whether or not they are Set) - See M$DN
Article(s) below...
As well as using the normal "OpenWith" Box, you can also use the
[Change..] or [Advanced...] Buttons to Set up File Associations.
It may be worth doing it that way?
For some more Info about it, have a look on the M$DN (micro$oft
Developers Network) Site at Articles such as these...
Creating a File Association
(Look at the section "Defining Attributes for a File Class")

The above link is not working..
The file is supposed to be a JPEG Photo file It's when I click & save from
my TV Which a long time ago worked OK Don't ask what I've done to make it so

Further info, if it helps at all. I’ve tried to demonstrate what’s
happening:

Your problem is not that File Association is not working,
it is that the file you are trying to open has no extension, and therefore
cannot have a file type associated with it. [No extension is one of the
reasons why that box is untickable]
You need to ensure that it gets a valid extension when you save - either
typing it in yourself, or setting the 'Files of Type' dropdown in the Save
dialogue to JPEG (or something with the .jpg extension).
You have got '[]Hide file extensions for known file types' UNticked in Folder
Options, haven't you. Leaving it ticked can cause great confuzzlement in
situations like this.
For that particular file in your demo, rename it from 'me' to 'me.jpg'
