I have been having a look at some of the articles on web-search for setting up a
new PC - one of these was obviously an American site and mentioned that Dell
do not ship a Windows XP disc with a new PC. Since you have both recently
dealt with them did they provide one to you?.

Troy's Human...
Don't worry - you will be able to create your own - I've done it. You'll

TH I am just getting used to Windows 98 and not worrying what I do on this
one and it's shortly going out the door.
I shall be a bundle of nerves with the new one:-)).

- you will be able to create your own - I've done it. You'll

only be allowed to do it once though.

You sound so confident!!

Get back to us when you get your new Dell and instructions will be
issued:-)

donut...
Thanks - I shall need it.

Do you Skype BTW ? Might be handy.

donut...
No - have wondered about that - how does it work?

Troy's Human...
All you need is a headset and you can chat to other Skype users for free.
Comes in handy when needing help/advice. I've just had a chat with Steve
about our Dells on Skype - first time I've ever spoken to him :-)

BTW - I'm assuming you have broadband - Skype doesn't work too well without
it.

donut...
Yes I have broadband but would need a headset. Should I wait until I get
the new PC before I download it, do you think?

John the R-T...
No need to wait. As you are saving useful bits and bobs just add
Skype. You could even practise before the new PC arrives.

Steve...
Now why didn't I think of that, Doh!!

donut...
Since answering my previous post I have been on the phone to Maplins - (near
to us, good parking and within my toddling distance from car to shop!!)
They have headsets ranging in price from £4.99 to £30.
While I was on the phone I asked the price of a cable to transfer data from
PC to PC.
(Got this idea from that article I wrote about in my first post in this
thread and thought it *may* may the transition easier.)
USB cable £19.99.
Now I do not know if this is the cable I would actually need, or if indeed
such a thing would work. A friend suggested using an external drive to
download all from old mach. to external drive and then from external drive
to new mach. He has an external drive which I can have the loan of.
The idea of dowloading Skype to practice on here would be an idea John. I
used to have Messenger but there was never anyone on line when I was so I
gave it up!

PC Weird is near enough to us too so should have no probs getting a headset.

Steve...
The choice is yours

donut...
Mmm I know - mid range I reckon!!

How do you connect to the internet is it through a USB Modem or a
router? If it's through a router you will be able to network your
machines and transfer all of your data that way.

USB connection.

Steve...
Good idea if he's happy you have to remember you will need drivers for
it (external HD) when D/Ling from the Win 98 machine.

donut...
He is happy enough to loan it.
I suppose he knows about needing a driver.

Skype only works with Win 2000 or XP

donut...
Yes I have found that out now *but* I have been on the 'track my order' site

Troy's Human...
Not so :-) It's just the video part that won't work with 98.

I've just spoken to Steve using Skype from a PC with Windows 98SE.

Just download and install it. Skype is one of the easiest things to set up

My Skype w*rks fine on mt Windows 98SE machine.

I've come across.

on Dell - my order is being prepared for shipment as at today's date.

Apl. so after I get set up and connected to the ISP............ and setting
a firewall.............. and looking at security settings.............

Ali...
Set up the firewall *before* you connect to the ISP, in fact before you
connect to the modem.

You can download your firewall (and antivirus) of choice (XP version) using
your current computer, and move the install file(s) across like everything
else.

etc........... etc........... etc. I shall probably be back on line by
Christmas:-)) maybe before that with the help of all those wonderful people

Steve...
PCW headsets start at £9.99 and go up to £99 for a wireless version.

donut...
Mmmm - well I don't think I will be going so far as that wirelessy one.

Steve...
I would wait until you have your new machine, I don't use a headset just
an old Mic that I bought years ago and the sound comes through my
speakers. I imagine you can get a Mic for a couple of £'s.

John the R-T...
I bought a Logitech headset for £14.99 in PC Weird. The appear to
have increased the price to £19.99 though.

donut...
By now you will probably have read my reply to JRT, so will not repeat it.
There was a mic. bundled with this mach. which I used three times on
Messenger and Net meeting but whereas it worked I think a headset would be
easier for listening to.

donut...
Been to the Skype site - I cannot find how to download for Win 98 - only
seems to be downloading for XP.

My Skype name is troytheblacklab

Steve...
You have to specifically order one at a cost of £5.88 in the spec I
posted it was:

*Operating System Backup & Recovery Genuine Windows® XP Home SP2 with
backup media CD*

To check if you ordered one check the order confirmation pdf you
received from Dell and look for the line containing the operatiing
system mine has XP Pro and looks like this:

*620-10505 English - Win XP SP2 Pro Backup Media~English - Win XP SP2
Pro Backup Media*

does yours have the *- Win............*
