possibly daft question regarding tcp/ip

Tickettyboo...
Have seen this entry in the event log of a pc ( no, not mine)

tcp/ip has reached the security limit for the number of concurrent tcp

pmj...
& what is the actual "Event" Number?
& also what is shown (in the Event Log) as the "Source" of
the Event?
Is this in the "System" Event Log?
Or the "Application" Event Log?

It *should* be (if it's a TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) Error) in the "System" Event Log.

Tickettyboo...

connect attempts

Now , user is having problems staying connected on Skype, I know that
Skype opens lots of connections, but they seem to be on udp, apart from

pmj...
Yep, both ways.

It makes *Outbound* Connection attempts to *loads* of different
Ports, on *loads* of different IP Addresses & also accepts
*Incoming* Connections on one, random, (but specifiable) Port
from all over the place.

usually one, which is on tcp.

pmj...
That depends on how long the User is OnLine on Skype.
& also whether they are behind a NAT (Network Address Translation)
Router.

The longer a User is OnLine, the more Connections are made through
the Skype Client & it *can* become what is known as a "SuperNode",
under certain circumstances.

That's all to do with the way that any P2P (Peer to Peer) System,
such as Skype is, works.

Question:
does this concurrent connection limit, only apply to tcp, or would it add
up the udp connections too? In other words, could that be a possible cause

pmj...
UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is actually (quite a bit) different from
TCP - though they are related & also very often mixed up - even by the
Operating System, which sometimes lumps TCP stuff in with UDP stuff.

TCP maintains a "State" for a Connection, but UDP doesn't.
& TCP has Error Correction, which means that Dropped packets will
(or should) get ReSent, but UDP doesn't.

of the connection holding problem with Skype?

pmj...
LOL!!!
:-)

Like Barbara says...

The answer to your Q is...

It *may* well be something to do with the prob.
On the other hand it may not...

It all depends!
On a lot of different things...

Tickettyboo...
I don't have a list of all the different things, just did a quick glance
in the event log to see if anything stood out. Problem seems to be, at
least temporarily, resolved by other means so I don't intend going too far
into it until/unless it becomes desperate.

Have a read up of some of the Info that Barbara Posted up some
Links to (& of the Info that is Linked to by those Articles)

But I don't s'pose it will.
:-(

Barbara...
Him indoors with the over inflated ego mumbled something about "pons
asinorum" and then spouted a load of technobabble which I've tried to
paraphrase -

"A: Yes possibly. Depends - remember the keyword here is "attempts". This
was
ttypically the XP SP2 security update that remove the registry entry (from
default of
infinite) connection attempts per sec to 10 via a new tcp.sys stack entry
instead.
Depending on whether we have a SP1 or SP2 system here and what hotfixes and
raw sockets, firewalls have been implemented, along with tweaks to MTU
settings depends on how you approach/resolve this."

If you're seeing Event 4224/6 then you can research this yourself by
starting with, perhaps say:

Tickettyboo...
Thank you, think its a bit beyond me but if it continues to happen I will
try to follow the urls and see what , if anything, I can understand.

noreen...
You did a good job Boo,lets hope you fixted it ;-))))

Tickettyboo...
Oh Noreen, I fixted your plusnet server problem, but I just looked at the
Skype, didn't do anything :-)
