I got this thinggy in the corner of my screen that keeps saying "updates are
available for your computer"
What do I do ?
I dont really want internet explorer version 7 - but if I click on the
update then I,m sure to get it !!
Do I have to have this version ?
Cant I stay with the version 6 that I got already ?
How to I "Stick" to what I got - ?

You can turn off automatic updates:
Control Panel -> System -> Automatic Updates Tab
I always turn it off (along with System Restore) but I'm happy about the
security on my PC.

I did the automatic update the other morning and got IE7. Think I prefer
Version 6 but too late now.

Isn't that what System Restore is for?

Same here ...
I just click on the "install them" button, then a box appears with
"automatic" or "custom" install.
Choose Custom.
That will bring up a list of the updates available with a tickbox next to
each.
You can untick the ones you don't want - like IE7.
And then it will ask if you want to be reminded again - tick "don't remind
me about these"
the updates you have ticked will be installed, the others won't be.
If you change your mind later, you can get a set of updates available from
M$ direct.

In
Control Panel -> System -> Automatic Updates Tab
you can set the updates to "Notify me but don't automatically download or
install them"
If you then click the "updates are ready" (yellow shield) and choose the
"Custom" (or similar) button, you can de-select IE7 and tick a box to have
it not be offered again.

offered again ??

It might be on the "next" page - check out Neil's reply again - he says
"And then it will ask if you want to be reminded again - tick "don't remind
me about these""

There isnt a "next page" !!!
just the one page !!

You, JoeH and neil are in different places :-)
I suspect you are in:
Control Panel -> System -> Automatic Updates Tab
and neil is actually in the update installer (I am guessing slightly since
I've not seen it)
Let us know what you actually want to do with Automatic Updates and we'll
take it from there :-)

What I,m trying to do is not to install the update because I dont want to
update to Internet Explorer version 7
The little yellow shield is still there and when I click it - and then
choose manual - and then untick internet explorer version 7 - everything
seems OK - but then the yellow shield is still there and on reboot it keeps
asking me to install an update that I dont want. I cant find anywhere to
tick that will say "Dont remind me again "

What you need to do now is go to the MS update site and it is there that
you tell it not to remind you again..
you can then turn your auto update back on.

But that means you won't get *any* updates unless you go to fetch them,
when all you want to do is avoid IE7.
Next time I get notified of some I'll do some screenshots.
