I recently set-up my friends laptop, she has never used a computer before,
she has been sending and receiving e-mails o.k. but she has rung me tonight
as she can't send e-mails she says she has lost the box `create mail` I told
pmj...
|
Jackie...
|
I have been round to my friends this morning but could not sort the
pmj...
problems. She had unexpected company so it was a little difficult to do much
in her small flat.
I did look at her laptop and as you said e-mails she was trying to send were
pmj...
|
So that means she was able to get the "Compose New Message" window
OK & fill it all out OK?
Good!
:-)
But then there's some prob with the actual *Sending* of them.
:-(
So know we know where to look, to see what's causing the prob...
|
in her outbox, I tried sending them but could not kept getting an error
message
which I did not really have a chance to make a note of. When I closed OE was
pmj...
|
We do really need to know the full, complete & exact Error Message.
That will point us to where (& what's causing) the prob.
& also, we may need to look at the SMTP Log File (which needs to
be Enabled in the OutLook Express Options, on the Maintenance Tab) -
that will also Help a lot, cos it lists all the Connection Attempts
& results to the Server & the Commands issued to (& the Responses from)
the Server.
|
getting message saying you have unsent e-mails do you want to send them
pmj...
|
Yep, that's what OutLook Express does, if there are still eMails in
the OutBox (in other words that haven't been Sent to the Server yet)
when it's closed down.
|
now - said yes but still got the error.
pmj...
|
Yep.
If it can't Send the eMails when you're using it, it isn't likely
to be able to Send them when it's being shut down either!
That Message is really for when you've *Intentionally* Sent stuff
to the OutBox to be "Sent later", but then forgot to Send them.
|
In IE I did set it to Blank o.k. but when I re-booted the address line had
gone missing altogether so I had to leave it like that.
pmj...
|
Do you mean the "AddressBar"?
If so, then that's just an Option that needs Checking...
RightClick the MenuBar (or the ToolBar below it) & that should give
you a Context Menu - make sure that "AddressBar" is Ticked.
If it is Ticked anyway, then it's likely that the AddressBar has
just been Moved (or ReSized) so that it's not Visible.
|
I hope you don't mind but I told her I would get in touch with you and you
pmj...
might ring her. I left a message on your mobile with her name and phone
number.
Thank you pmj.
pmj...
|
Yep, I got that OK, when I woke up, thanks.
:-)
I rang her up & we have had a good Session "in the Bikesheds" -
using M$ NetMeeting!
:-)
I was able to see the actual Error Message that she was getting
when she tried Sending Mails.
An unknown error has occurred.
Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk',
Server: 'smtp.tiscali.co.uk',
Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '421 Cannot connect to SMTP server
212.74.114.61 (212.74.114.61:25), connect error 10060',
Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 421,
Error Number: 0x800CCC67
Unfortunately, it rather stumped me!
:-(
I couldn't understand why it was saying what it said!!!
It said that it couldn't Connect to the Server...
But that was being said in a *Response from the Server*!!!
So, if it couldn't Connect to it, how could it get a Response back
from the Server?
So I said I would have to leave it for the mo & see if I could suss
it out & I'd ring her another day about it...
But then, I was writing out a Post detailing the Error & asking for
some suggestions as to what might be causing it, when it suddenly
clicked!!!
It must be the AntiVirus thingy that she is using - That is obviously
Setting itself up as a "Proxy" Server, between her eMail Client
(OutLook Express) & her actual Mail Server (smtp.tiscali.co.uk)
OutLook Express *is* Connecting OK to the AV Proxy Server (& thus
is able to get the "421" Error Response back from it), but then it's
the *Proxy* Server that isn't managing to Connect to the actual
(Tiscali) Mail Server (failing with a standard "10060" Socket Error.
So now we know what (& where) the prob is, it should be relatively
easy to sort it out!
:-)

Good morning pmj. just checking before closing my laptop for the holiday.
Thank you for all you have done for my friend I am really grateful.
So you found something that had a stumped for a little while, no wonder I
was having problems.
Thanks again.

her how to get the views bar and she has ticked it and the bar has come up,
Jackie...
|
I have been to see my friend but I could not sort out her laptop
pmj...
|
OK - I know you Phoned me & we have talked about the various probs
& I've tried to explain what causes them & how to make them Fixted,
but I think it's worthwhile me replying here as well, in case other
people may be interesed...
|
when you select create mail she gets a different box comes up for e-mail:
pmj...
|
Yep - one of the things you will (& have!) find, when you start
to look at other people's PCs & Help them with their probs is that
*everybody's* PCs are Set up differently & many things will look
different & have various different Options!
Things you may take for granted on your PC just won't look the same
(or even exist!) on another PC...

the top line usually show from with your own e-mail address in it. I could
not change it anyway. Also in IE where she used to have Blank
pmj...
|
Yep, but that's only if you have more than one eMail Address
(Account) Set up in OutLook Express.
If you do have more than one eMail Address (Account) Set up (which
many people do, but your friend doesn't), then OutLook Express will
show (whatever is Set as) the *Default* eMail Address on the top Line
(in the "From: " Field).
It's a DropDown Box, so you can actually change the eMail Address
(Account) that you are using to Send it.
But if you only have one email Address (Account) Set up in OE, (as
your friend obviously has) then it does show the "From: " Address
at all.
That can be a bit Confuzzling, if you haven't come across that before,
but it explains why yours looks different from hers.
|
she has MSN home page comes up.
Do you think she might have a virus?
pmj...
|
While Viruses (& other MalWare such as AdWare & SpyWare) *can* (& do!)
change the Home Page Setting in IE, since it is the M$N Home Page that
is showing, it's far more likely that a *micro$oft* program changed it.
Things like M$N messenger have a nasty habit of ReSetting various
Browser Settings & Options, such as the Home Page & the Search Page
etc, to what *they* want, when you Install them.
Also, if she happens to have pressed the [Reset Web Settings] Button
in the Internet Options Dialog Box (on the Programs Tab), then that
will *also* ReSet things like the Home Page etc.
Try Manually changing it back to "about:blank" (or whatever Page
she wants to have Set as her Home Page), then close the Browser down
(all Browser Windows) & ReOpen it.
See if Home Page Setting stays as you Set it.
& also close the PC down completely & ReBoot &it see if the Home
Page Setting has now chjanged.
If it *has* changed, after a reBoot, then that means that there's
something that is Set to Load & run at boot Up, which is ReSetting
things.
& you need to suss out what that is, cos that's (potentially)
Malicious (& unwanted) behaviour
|
I could not stay very long as we are going away on Friday and I have things
to do but if I could get some guidance I may be able to pop in on her
tomorrow
and have another look. She is not happy!!!
pmj...
|
Well, anybody who is new to using a PC (& also a lot of people who
have used them for a while!) will often come up against various
annoying (& frustrating & Confuzzling) things like that.
I reckon you've done pretty well so far, Helping her out & getting
her System Set up OK!
:-)
Keep it up!
:-)
jackie...
|
Thank you for giving the information again pmj, I will pop round and see
what I can do this morning and let you know how we got on.
|
|
|
pmj...
|
Well, the "Create Mail" Icon isn't actually on the *Views* Bar -
it's on the normal Toolbar & you can also get to it using...
Menu>File>New>Mail Message
|
pmj...
|
You can also get to various other Settings to change what shows
& how they show, by using...
Menu>View>Layout.
& also, try RightClicking the ToolBar (or MenuBar, at the top of the
Window, below the TitleBar), & Ticking the ones (ToolBar/Views Bar)
that you want shown & also choosing "Customise...", so you can change
which Icons are shown on the Toolbar.
Bear in mind that OE remembers *different* ToolBar Settings, depending
on which part of the Program you are in - it shows *different* ToolBars
when you are on the Main, Front Page, from the ones that it shows when
you have a Mail Folder (or News Folder) Selected, on the Left.
|
but it seems she keeps losing this views bar - how does she lock it? mine
pmj...
|
See above.
In OE the ToolBars are remembered for each different part of the
Program & there's no separate Option to "Lock" the ToolBars (unlike
in windoze (& Internet) Explorer).
|
stays where it is? then she says she doesn't have the drop down box `hide
read or ignored messages, show all messages etc.` I will have to try and
pmj...
|
Now *that's* the Views" Bar!!!
It may well be Ticked (to show it), but she may have accidentally
Dragged it to one Side (or up or Down), so it no longer Fits.
Get her to find out about & learn about (by *trying* the various
different things) all the different things that can be done with
ToolBars - many people who are new to using a PC (& also quite a
few who have been using them for a while!) find that they accidentally
& unintentionally Move the various Toolbars in the Window & then don't
know how to get them back!!!
So it's best to know a bit about what they do & how they work & how
to use them.
One of the first things is to learn about is the "Moving" Handle
on them - that's the Vertical Row of Dots at the Left hand end of
the Toolbar.
Hover over that & see how the Cursor changes to the "Move" (EW -
Double ended Arrows) Cursor.
Click (& hold) on that, then try Moving it...
It may *seem* (at first) as if nothing much is happening, but when
you Move it a bit more, it will suddenly "Jump" to another place.
You can move it Horizontally (from Side to Side) & *also* Vertically
(Up & Down)
Also, if you Double Click on (most) ToolBar Handles, they will
"AutoSize" - they sort of "Shuffle along" to fit.
|
see her, but the views bar kept disappearing when I used her laptop. Any
suggestions please. ????

Hmm!! Much as I'd hate to argue with MS a certain techie ( whom I trust
implicitly) advised many moons ago that 5.Check When Outlook Express
starts, go directly to my Inbox. wasn't a good idea.
Cue pmj :-)
