Thank you to everyone for the suggestions
over the choices between handsets v headsets.
In the end life intervened and things got a little delayed.
I did get it sorted - well partly sorted.
I bought a 20 quid Skype Mono Headset - USB
I know that I had said that I would be buying the Logitech
Premium 350 USB Stereo Headset but decided that this
would be less annoying on my head. It is closer to the
device that I had often used at jbex. At half the price :-)
I do still intend to add handsets to the other machines but
we appear to be re-locating in the near future so that has
been put on hold for now.
Once again. Many thanks all.
I am just "ramblingon" and on.

Thanks for that andon - I am going to get a headset so that I can use
skype comfortably - they look good :)

I was particularly concerned that I would Not develop problems with
plugging and unplugging the Headset in. I wanted the speakers as
normal for when I was not using the headset, and have no ability to
go messing about with the back of the PC.
I can confirm that the headset I chose will plug into any USB socket
and immediately turn the speakers off and activate the headset. When
I pull the headset USB plug out the Speakers immediately return to
playing the sounds.

You can leave the USB headset plugged in and configure Skype so all
calls go through the headset and the main speakers play the ring tone.
This leaves you free to configure your main system sounds through your
normal speakers. QED no need to plug/unplug anything.

My Logitech USB headset remains plugged all the time - I'm sure your
headset could be set up to do that too.
Keep Sound/Audio playback default set to your speakers.
In Skype - Tools/Options/Sound Devices - set Audio in and Audio out to your
USB headset. The speakers *should* then remain on and the headset only
activated when you are using Skype.

Thanks Troy's Human & Steve, yes I am sure that I can use the system
in the way you say. Not tested under fire yet as I have only rung the
Auto Voice. Certainly the XP controls would suggest that when set as
you detail that is what would happen.
I have set Skype to Windows Default so when I plug in the headset it
diverts All sound to that. People see the headset on my head and
assume that I am talking on the phone and leave me alone .
I have a 4x USB powered socket next to the telephone as I need it to
plug in a KeyDrive/Camera/PDA etc.,
Once I start receiving/making Skype calls I may change the settings
back to the more conventional manner.
