Laptop..do I or don't I

Ah, well that's where the 'real' experts are.

What do you think about a laptop as a replacement for a desktop.

It works. I use a laptop all the time.
Think what you want to use it for. Can you hook up an external monitor?
That will be useful, especially if you can extend the desktop and not
just mirror it.
How about hooking it up to the TV to watch the odd video or photo
slideshow? Can you do that?
Network connections, USB, Firewire, all very useful.
How easy is it to add more RAM? Essential that one as most computers are
sold with less than is really required.
Screen size. 15" minimum really, and matt or shiny. Check out the
difference.
Do you want to take it out occasionally? Weight might be a factor.

Are you a Windows man. Vista is on the horizon, will the machine run it?
Many won't with all the bells and whistles switched on.

You can also use an external keyboard (PS/2 or USB, depending on what
sockets are available).

I had a laptop only, for several years, while space was an issue. Even
now I still have one as well as the desktop. I was always very happy using
the keyboard, even now I would moan more about screen size than that. I
always use another mouse, never got on with the pads!

Get a decent one though, not easy to upgrade them, and you want it to last.
My current one came with some free extra RAM which was nice.

My old poota has about had it ( grandbairns and others downloading all sorts
of rubbish does not help )
I could leave the old poota for everyone to use and I could keep the laptop
for my own use. There are some reasonably priced laptops out there.
My main interest is art and digital photography oh and My silversurfer

Buy a Mac, you'll get everything you need already installed.:-)
