Don't think I have got room for that one :-)

The new machine will be able to achieve "petaflop speeds," said IBM. One
petaflop is the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

A "calculation" being what? And a "trillion" being what?

I think he's just trying to say it's bl***y fast Frederick.

One petaflop is 10 to the power 15 FLoating point OPerations (per second,
presumably) so a trillion would be 10 to the power 12 (a million million) and
a flop (the 'calculation' of the press story) is a simple addition or
subtraction of two floating point numbers (or other operations completed in
equivalent time).
How big (or small) a floating point number could be depends on the
architecture of the computer.

That speed would do me nicely thank you :-)
Emm the Sony connection has put me off a bit :-)
