By PN that is:
My stable rate has been reduced overnight (01-00 to 10-00 16/08/2006) from
3000 kbps to 2500 kbps again. I checked my synch rate just before logging
off at 01-00 and it was around 4600 kbps. I checked it again when I
rebooted my router at around 10-00 only a few 10s different. It's currently
4544 kbps. So it seems like my only crime was to have my router powered
down between 01-00 and 10-00 today. Should I be leaving it powered up 24/7
if I am to return from the current measured download speed of around 2340
kbps to the 2870 kbps I was getting yesterday and for almost the last couple
of weeks.
And when I posed the question in plusnet.service.customer-feedback, her was
the Plusnet Support Team's reply within 3½ hours:
I'd say you're probably best to leave it connected all the time. Every
time the line re-syncs this will be recorded by BT, if the sync rate is
lower then it may decrease the throughput. So long as it's stable at a
higher rate then it will increase the throughput speed.
For me, I leave mine connected all the time, the only times I've
disconnect are when there's been a thunderstorm and when my cat decided to
unplug the router.
Now that leaves other issues for those with modems instead of routers. Like
noisy fans on all night and excessive usage of leccy + many others i would

But it's not that long ago that they were saying to keep rebooting the
router to force it to synch at a higher rate. Mine gets unplugged every
night and my synch speed is pretty stable. Download speed varies from day to
day and at different times of the day but the synch speed doesn't vary much.

I thought there'd be lots of comments like that too.

And I had an email from Plusnet support earlier today that said:
Yes, this is likely to be due to the router being off as the line has had to
re-sync and has stablised at the lower speed. If you reboot regularly you
may achive a higher stable rate.
But what is regularly? Once per day, every few hours or what. Just
rebooted this morning and now synching at 5024 kbps - the highest it's ever
been, but stable rate remains at 2500 kbps and download speed around 2300

But it needs time for the stable rate to alter.

Do you actually do anything with your computer apart from monitor the
internet connection and post in here?
;-)

Cheeky!!! Yep, but I tend to monitor the connection, immediately before
shutting down and then immediately after booting up the next day.
|
My opinion of MaxDSL is that BT seriously under estimated the rate of
take up, plus the technology is far from stable.
The ISP's, PlusNet included, are at the sharp end of customer complaints
about something which is in fact not their fault.
Not an enviable position to be in.
For what it's worth if I were you I would just get on with life and let
your iternet connection sort itself out. Which it will eventually do.
Oh and stop switching your router off every night. That bit of advice
was good.

Why ? FWIW I don't leave my telly plugged in ever night, it's a fire risk
,so why should I leave a router plugged in ? Serious question BTW.

Maybe, but there's quite a few who return in there to chivvy things along a
bit, aren't there.

Yep and I'd be sorry to see a couple of them disappear for good, I enjoy
their posts :-)
