In the last couple of days I've had a pop-up telling that I'm running out of
Wrinklie One =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A9?=...
|
Thanks for reminder, just moved page file off OS partition to storage
partition..
(having left 2mb min on C:)
|
*Virtual Memory*.
What's that about please?
Rabbit...
|
Don't know but I'll sell you a ticket for the bike sheds. Special offer if I
get the rights to the story of what goes on ;-)
jamps...
|
OK - I'll put my hat and scarf on! lol
Rabbit...
|
Just as long as you *keep your hat on* ;-)
jamps...
|
:-) My wooly hat will take care of the rollers! ;-)
|
|
|
BunnyHare...
|
oo-er forgot to get a ticket again!!
Rabbit...
|
Wot again ???:-)
BunnyHare...
|
Well it was just a progress check from the previous time you understand
:-))
Rabbit...
|
But for that you should have bought a BOGOF ticket in the first place ;-)

if you mean a little Yellow "Balloon" thingy, in the bottom right
of the Screen, near the System Tray, then that's telling you that
windoze reckons that there isn't enough "Virtual Memory".
"Virtual Memory" is another name for the "Page File" (or "Swap File")
It *should* say (in the Balloon) that it is adjusting it for you,
(cos the Default & normally best Setting is to have it Set to "System
Managed")
jamps...
|
<<>>>>>
Yes - it's the little balloon thingy - stating 'Windows Virtual Memory too
low' and is adjusting it.
It appeared again this morning and looking at the W$ 'help' it seems that I
have too many things running at the time and I'd only just switched on!
pmj...
|
Well, you might have!
There are loads of things that (Set themselves to) Load up & Run at
Bootup, if you let them, but *usually* most of those sort of things
don't use all that much RAM.
It *might* be that one of them is something that is "leaking" Ram?
You've got 512MB of RAM though, haven't you?
That should be plenty & the Page File shouldn't be needing to be
adjusted - *providing* the Page File Settings are right...
There were some Threads in here Recently about all that sort of
stuff. Saxman was having similar probs.
Have a look through them, cos I Posted up a couple of very useful
little Scripts that I have written, which you can Run, so as to check
what's what & so you can then Post the Results up, so people can help
you track down the probs.
Look for:
MemoryUsage.vbs
&
ProcessInfo.vbs
pmj...
I've also written a similar Script which will Read all that
Information about the Page File Settings, if you want to use that,
rather than faffing around looking in the System Info Dialog Boxes
for the Info you need to look at, to find what the Settings are & to
find out if anything has changed, or if anything needs to be changed.
this lets you get the Output into a text File, so you can Post the
Info up, rather than trying to Write it all down by hand, from a
Dialog Box.
:-)
PageFileUsage.vbs
pmj...
'***
'Uses WMI to Read Page File Usage Information
On Error Resume Next
sClass = "Win32_PageFileUsage"
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\cimv2")
Set colItems = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from " & sClass,,48)
Set objClass = objWMIService.Get(sClass)
s = sClass
For Each objItem in colItems
For Each objProperty in objClass.Properties_
s = s & VBCRLF & objProperty.Name
s = s & ":" & VBTAB
s = s & Eval("objItem." & objProperty.Name)
Next
Next
WScript.Echo s
'***
When you Run that directly, it just Pops up a Dialog Box wit hthe
Settings in it.
If you want to get the Output into a Text File, (so you can Post the
Results for people to help out with) you can Run it from a Command
Prompt Window, using cscript & "ReDirect" the Output to a File...
cscript PageFileUsage.vbs > pagefileusage.txt
If you need any Help Copying & Pasting that into a Text File & Saving
it as a .vbs File & Running it, then Post back - there are several
people in here who have tried that & can Help you suss it out.
The MemoryUsage & PageFileUsage Scripts only give a very small
(short) Output, so Post them Both up complete, but the ProcessInfo
Script gives about 50 or 60 KB of Output, cos it gives all the Info
for each & every Running Process - don't Post that yet, leave that
till later, if we need it.
jamps...
|
I can't even get of the starting blocks pmj. :-(
pmj...
|
Oh dear!!!
:-(
Sorry - I had to go out to work , so I haven't been around much for
the last few days, but I was hoping that there would be other people
Reading & following these sort of Threads, who would be able to have
Helped you with it.
|
I've printed it all out but it's like a foreign language to me and, even
pmj...
|
Yep - But you don't need to be able to understand the actual Script
Language to Run the Script!!!
:-)
All you have to do is to just Copy & Paste it into Notepad, then
Save it as a .vbs File & Open it up (Run it) - that will give then
give you a MessageBox containg the Info about the PageFileUsage
& the MemoryUsage etc.
& then yo ucan Run it from a Command Prompt, so as to get the Output
into a Text File, so as to then Post teh Info up.
|
though I've tried several times, I get nowhere!
pmj...
|
Oh dear!
Never mind, when yo u*do* get somewhere, you'll see how easy it is.
It's prolly just something very simple that you're doing wrong
(or not doing) that is making it seem like you are getting nowhere.
|
Maybe, at some time in the future, we can have a session in the bikesheds?
Rabbit...
|
At least you bought your ticket in advance, unlike Barb ;-)
BunnyHare...
jamps...
|
.and I got a BOGOF!
For-warned is for- armed. :-)
Rabbit...
|
Don't forget the story. Though I doubt the News of The World will have much
free money just now perhaps The Sun might be interested if you get piccies
jamps...
|
I suppose you want colour piccies too? In that case make me an offer! lol
|
;-)
|
|
|
pmj...
|
Yep!
Certainly!!!
Definitely.
That sounds like a good idea!!!
Give us a shout sometime - either on Skype or Ring me?
Or try Calling me directly on NetMeeting?
I will give you a Call sometime & see if we can nip in the BikeSheds
& I'll show you how to Copy & paste those Scripts & run them so as
to find out the Info about the Page File & memory stuff, so you can
get rid of that "Balloon" telling you about the Page file.
|
lol
Rabbit...
|
Not until I see the merchandise :-)
|
|
|
|
If it (the Virtual Memory (Page File) isn't Set to "System Managed",
then that Balloon is Warning you that it would be a good idea to check
the Settings of it.
& how do you do that then?...
The Settings are actually buried quite deeply, through several
levels of Dialog Boxes, (in the "System Properties"), so many
people never even know they exist & even fewer people change them.
Have a look at...
Open up the System Properties (RightClick My Computer>Properties,
or in Control Panel, or WinFlag Key + Pause/Break)
Go to...
Advanced Tab
Performance ---
billy...
|
I think as we get older all our vitual memories fail.
What do you do in bike sheds you see i've forgotten
jamps...
|
Have a nice long chat with a handsome man! Sometimes we stop for a cup of
Rabbit...
|
Oh you creep you :-) BTW you forgot *young* :-)
|
Rabbit...
|
Hot and steamy ??? :-)
jamps...
|
Oh Yes - very!!
Rabbit...
|
We are still talking about the coffee ???;-)
jamps...
|
Of course - what else?
Rabbit...
|
Oh nothing else, just wanted to be sure ;-)
|
|
|
|
|
coffee! :-)
|
|
[Settings...]
Then in the "Performance Options", go to...
Advanced Tab
Virtual Memory
Post back with what it says there.
& also Click [Change...] (but don't change anything - you only need
to *look* at the mo, but you have to Click the [Change...] Button,
to get to See what it's Set to!)
See?
I said many people never know anything about it & that's why.
I'm sure most people wouldn't Press a Button labelled [Change...],
if all they want to do is to just look, or unless they *did* want to
change it & they wouldn't know whether they actually needed to change
it until they had Looked!
Anyway, Click the [Change...] Button & then Post back with what it
says there.
You'll need to Highlight each Drive Letter (in the List at the top),
so you can then see what it says in the bit below
Post back with what it says.
There's a very quick & simple Script you can Copy & Paste into
a Text File, then Save & Run, which will tell you (& therefore us)
all of that Info about the Page File Settings, without having to do
any of that Faffing around in all those Dialog Boxes, so if you'd
rather do it with a Script, then Post back & I'll Post the Script
(it's less than 20 Lines) & I also have another one (which is the
same apart from one Line) which might Help as well, but that shows
all the Memory Usage (i.e. RAM Memory) Figures as opposed to just
the Page File Usage

andon...

probably the pop-up stealing it
