Okay, so for years I have staunchly resisted it. I 'just said no' LOL
I read various people saying they had the habit and I was determined not
to go down that road, I had will power, I could resist!
Then a friend asked me to find out some info and I couldn't resist a peek.
jammyface...
|
Oh, thanks, Boo!
Like I *needed* another obsession!
:-(
It's all *your* fault, Boo, I had resisted until then!
Tickettyboo...
|
Go stand in the corner with Frogman please. He's picking on me too!
|
I've only got back as far as my GGparents, so far... but I've only been
looking for the last four days....
~~Linda~~...
|
Rofl, join the club Jammyface. Nice to see you btw, how's the family? (the
live ones that is, not the ones you're trying to find!)
jammyface...
|
Thank you, squigglyLinda, nice to see you, too. :-) The live ones are
pretty much fine (see my reply to Boo) and I've had a couple of days off
researching the others, found out that my maternal Grandmother's father died
when she was only a few days old (she born 27 feb 1902, her father died on
01 mar 1902) and her parents wed in 1898, must jbex on that link - i got
links with landed gentry it seems..... maybe....

Hiya jammyface !! , how's you n yours?

Now I have just found my GreatGranda and GreatGranny getting married on
30th Nov 1869 at Setter on Bressay Island in the Shetlands
I get the feeling this is gonna cost me a fortune!

Lucky you, I can't even find any trace of either *myself* or my parents

that proves I exist):-)

Have you searched through the GRO Indexes?

And how do I do that Gareth?

Under the Births section of...

You'll have to sign up for a Free account though...
OR if you wish to mail me your full name and birth year I can do it for

It's OK... I've found you.
I'll email you the details. :-)))

I'm amazed, how much you found out and how little you knew about me 8-o

I am still resisting but I would really like to find out about my Great
Grand parents and before
as they came from Italy and I would like to know when and where!! there
are so many places to look I just don't know the best place to start.
~~Linda~~...
|
I started researching my family tree about four years ago but it got filed
away under the desk and in a folder on my pc until this week, when reading
this lot got me thinking maybe I should carry on. I know what you mean
about where to look and how best to record it all, I'm a bit bogged down at
the moment and unless I can sort this mess out, I know I'll just carry on
going round in circles.
Do all/any of you that are 'hooked' subscribe to Ancestry.com and is it
worth the money? I was a bit wary of signing up for the free trial, they
seem to want your credit card details even for the free stuff? :-/
Gareth...
|
Ancestry is rather a strange site. You can sign up for the 'free trial'
but as you say they need your credit card...
BUT
...if you sign up here,
...you'll have access to the Ancestry GRO Indexes and the 1881 and 1901
censuses without having to supply a credit card. All it requires is
your email address and a password of your choice.
~~Linda~~...
|
Yes I have done that but doesn't that still mean you are limited to viewing
only 'some' details? Is it worthwhile paying, for example, for a months UK
membership or is what you get not really worth the money? I'm a bit
confused :-(
|
Then occasionally they open up their whole site for you for a week
(you've just missed out on a free week) as a teaser but it's surprising
what you can find in a week. LOL
~~Linda~~...
|
Typical I'm always too late for the freebies lol
|
If you do decide to sign up and pay for *full access*, do it on the
.co.uk site and not the .com site
~~Linda~~...
|
Ok will bear that in mind. Thanks. I've found some of my relatives back to
about 1820 but *I* don't seem to exist lol
Gareth...
|
As I said, if you sign up here - FREE and NO credit card required.
...then search the GRO Index for your name and birth year, you should
find yourself, providing that you're not in Scotland or Northern
Ireland! ;-))
~~Linda~~...
|
It took a while but yes, I do exist... i was hiding under a yellow box!!
Tickettyboo...
|
hmmm I still rckon your Mum knitted you from a Woman's Weekly free
pattern. A few dropped stitches but otherwise you turned out ok.
~~Linda~~...

Good job it wasn't the week for free recipe cards then :-p

|
Gareth...
|
There's only one way to go and that's start with yourself and then work
backwards. When you find information it's always best to take a note of
the "source" too as it's surprising how often you'll find some
conflicting information later on and then you'll need to check out
where you found that original info.
Jackie...
|
Thank you Gareth, I did find that my Dad was born in Brighton, yet he
was christened in Southwark!!
andon...
|
Are you sure it wasn't Southwick
Jackie...
|
Thank you Andon, I am going to re-check that, as Gareth has suggested
that.
|
|
Gareth...
|
That's probably SOUTHWICK which is a few miles west of Brighton.
Gareth...
|
From west to east it looks like this on a map:
Lancing / Shoreham / Southwick / Portslade / Hove / Brighton /
Jackie...
|
Thank you, almost sure it was Southwark - will get the papers out.
Gareth...
|
If you'd like to give me his name and birth year I can check where his
birth was 'Registered'.
OR if you have already subbed a free account with Ancestry you can
check it yourself.
Go here...
Under the top section headed...
"Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983"
Click on 'Births' and enter his name and birth year, then click on the
little 'View Image' icon on the right to see the GRO Index page.
Jackie...
|
Thank you for that Gareth, I have to look up the paperwork as it is not
to hand at the moment,
then I will go to that Ancestry site and let you know how I get on.

Tickettyboo...

roflmho, like I'd care one way or another if they weren't
ack-shirley, with a bit of searching the web I have found someone else what has
done most of the hard graft for me. I found a tree for Granda's family
going back to 1768.
Gareth...
|
I just suggested searching the web for that! :-)
|
What's more it didn't cost me a penny ( who said that about Scottish
ancestry ?)
I may like to compile my own though,( see? I have trouble resisting
temptation lol) atm I have various bits n pieces in folders on my poota,
can you suggest any software that is simple, cheap ( or free) and would do
it to show the tree back from my girls as far as I have found??
~~Linda~~...
|
I'm drowing under a sea of all the stuff I've dug out from about four years
ago when i started 'cos reading this thread and talking to you got me
started again. Trouble is I'm going round in circles with what I've already
'half done' and how to get going again. Maybe it would have been easier to
start again from scratch as half the sites I had bookmarked don't seem to
exist any more. I know I need to slow down and get myself organised
properly! How did you get on with entering your rellies in that software? I
can still hear you muttering hehe :-)

Oh dear. And you know I think I might be getting the bug too after Mum gave
me my grandparents' birth certificates and marriage certificate and that
gives me the names of their parents and place names

Gareth...
|
Believe it or not, the hardest part is getting back to 1901. From there
backwards you have the censuses and IGI/parish records to help you.
BunnyHare...
|
Well I managed to find information on the 1901 census which tied in with the
information I had from Mum but so far haven't found them on the 1891
BunnyHare...
|
Well it seems that free 14 day access doesn't let me look on the 1891 census
because when I click on the view record I get directed to a page asking for
money so think I will have to spend cash to get further once I have things
sorted into some sort of order. Can you buy the census on disc or is it
cheaper to pay to view? Also I believeyou mentioned once about having
Gareth...
|
You could try here first...
FreeCEN is a project to transcribe all of the censuses which will be
made freely available to the public. It's a HUGE job and is being done
by volunteers worldwide and the site is regularly updated.
Another option is to see if the area where he/she lived has already
been transcribed by other people and to see if it's on the Net.
Try here...
You can purchase the censuses for various counties on CD but you then
have to scroll through nearly every page yourself and decipher the
handwriting, whereas with Ancestry they have all been transcribed but
there's thousands of errors because people who don't know the areas
make what we'd say is a silly mistake.
|
electoral roles - I know you can buy copies of the current role so presume
you must be able to buy older ones?
Gareth...
|
You'll find most electoral rolls at your local library.
I only have the 2003 UK Electoral Roll on CD.
|
~~Linda~~...
|
It is well worth paying £9.95 for a month to get access to all of the
census years. That is, as long as you don't mind yer backside staying on
the chair for a month! I seem to spend every available spare minute
scouring the site but it has been worthwhile! Frustrating sometimes but
great fun and immensely satisfying when you find another generation, as I
did over last couple of days!! Trying to be disciplined and tie up as many
of the loose ends and get my records in order at the moment.
|
~~Linda~~...
|
Sorry, forgot the link...
BunnyHare...
|
Thanks. Think I'd better get all the snippets together and in some sort of
order then I will know what questions I need to ask before I subscribe
~~Linda~~...
|
Lol, good luck... I am 'trying' to discipline myself to get the chaos
sorted. My parents came on Thursday and brought some old photos for me to
scan.. it was amazing putting faces to some of the names but some of the
really old ones no one knows 'who' they are. Such a shame, I bet we all
wish we (or someone else) had done all of this sooner, before those with
the memories were gone.
Gareth...
|
I've also been collecting old family photos, then scanning and saving
them to discs. I name the files by the person's 'birth names' too.
~~Linda~~...
|
We know that my Dad's sister had lots of old photographs but unfortunately
when she died, for some reason, they were thrown out :-( Once gone, not
only are those pictures lost forever but the chance of recalling old
memories and bits of information that looking through them can provoke. My
Mum came out with all sorts of little snippets that will provide clues on
Thursday, that she didn't 'think' she knew :-)
|
|
|
|
|
|
BunnyHare...
|
May well do that
Gareth...
|
Ooooh! I've got an email. :-)
Tip: When giving a name and date of birth like that, it would be more
helpful if you could either give the parents names (if you know them)
or an area where he was born. Do I look around Cornwall, Yorkshire...
or Barton in Lincolnshire? ;-)
~~Linda~~...
|
Avidly reading all the hints and tips you and others have posted. I'm
totally hooked on this Genealogy lark and it's keeping me occupied at times
when my hands and shoulders are playing up too much to sleep or do anything
else!
I do need to 'slow down' on the finding and get what I've got in proper

PAF 5, the one that MCC recommended. Trying to get it up to date now. I
also have a huge Excel spreadsheet that I've been building up, with
hyperlinks to Census, records and photo's etc on my pc, as long as I
remember not to move them to a different folder!

3. go to the 1881 census and try that
4. send me their details and I'll have a bash for you :-))

Did it do the trick or are you still hooked?
I shouldn't try and fight it, it gets us all in the end, just don't
leave it too long or there won't be any of your older rellies alive to
ask. This is what I regret most.. if only I'd asked so and so before
they died.... if only I'd taken more notice.
Ah well, too late now! :'(

I know the feeling Annie
I do so much regret not listening when my mum wanted to tell me about the
family and then when I did get the bug I started to ask her sister who would
not tell me a thing - didn't believe we should try and find these things.
Hope Boo still has relatives she can ask.
Gareth...
|
It's not too late, just a bit harder - maybe! ;-)
It seems that your aunt knew something that she wanted hidden which
would make me want to delve deeper. LOL
What year was your mother and her sister born and have you been able to
trace back yet?
donut...
|
Yes Gareth I have managed to trace back.
Mam was born 1902 and her sister 1907 but I have traced my maternal side
back to 5xggrandfather dob 7.6.1691 married 14.8.1716 and have found 5 of
their children.
It is a great feeling to find another relative. I think you were right
about aunt knowing something, looks like one old grannie had 3 daughters to
2 different fathers, and there are one or two children on census returns who
were apparently born to a 56 year old and older mothers:-)))
Paternal side has been interesting too.
Am still searching - just have a feeling that I should like to be able to go
back in time (just for a short while ) and meet them all.
Gareth...
|
You quite often find in those days that a young girl will have a child
out of wedlock and the girl's mother will bring it up as her own. I
think it's great fun searching and researching.
Look how quickly I managed to find Frogman's birth registration (it's
ok Froggie, I won't disclose anything on here!) and he hadn't even
given me his name or date of birth. ;-))
Frogman...

She had two blokes on the go, her husband and another who we called

It's surprising what you can find by putting their names into web-search

Blimey welcome to the club. Liz has discovered her ancestors apparently
owned half of London and had such luminaries as one C Dickens working

What happened to the money is anyones guess.
We were traipsing round North Wales last week photographing churches and
buildings in Wrexham where the family had law practices.
We stayed in a hotel which was once a rather grand very large Victorian
villa designed and built by another one of her ancestors who was an
architect and author.
In contrast, my side of the family were all farm labourers :-(
