Anyone in here have an iPod and do this?
Rabbit...
|
Apple have just cut the price too and just after the C*******s sale rush.

That's the Shuffle range. The speculation is the Shuffle will soon be
discontinued in favour of the iPod Nano, which covers a similar storage
range and price point but with a screen.
Rabbit...
|
Ah right, but it would have been a nice CS gesture it they had cut the price
before C******s
datasmog...
|
It's called commerce. Apple are not alone in this practice.
Rabbit...
|
Can't argue with that. Nintendo is notorious for similar actions with their
consoles and games.
|
They are in the fortunate position of being able to sell just about
everything they make, especially iPods.
Rabbit...
|
AFAIK ( and if it's true I'll give them their due) at least they don't
subscribe to the *rip off Britain* style of commerce 'cos I believe their
iPods are a similar price everywhere, well at least they don't convert from
$xx to £xx like so many things ( Levi jeans, CDs, DVDs etc)

Yes, I have a Portable MP3 Player, but it's not an Apple iPod
(It's one of the early Archos GMini xs200 - with 20GB Hard Disk)
*Any* MP3 Player can be used for listening to stuff, (not just Music,
but anything that you can get into MP3, (or with some makes such as
Archos .WMA .WAV & various other formats as well) it doesn't have
to be an iPod!
:-)
|
I've just been hearing all about this way of listening to recorded radio
progs via one's iPodon Sky news. I am definitely going to try this out.

|
You have an iPod?
Aries...
|
Yes, erm well, I bought it for Tony - it's his iPod really but I do all the
downloading
|
Did you miss the the list of Podcasts in iTunes?
Aries...
There is a comprehensive list built in and you can easily add more via
rss feeds or manually.
Aries...
|
I will now take a look at that, ta :)
|
These other applications do the same thing with the exception that they
support other players as well as the iPod.

Yep!
& Troy's Human may be interested to know this...
Troy's Human...

I download radio programmes using "Net Transport"
Takes about 1 minute for a 1 hour programme. I can then listen at my
pmj...
|
Yep!
:-)
But the actual time taken to Download them depends on the BitRate
used for the encoding. (& of course on your Download Speed & the
Speed of the Server)

convenience. Thinking of getting a mp3 player and would then have to
convert from ra to mp3
pmj...
What do you use to download the ra files ?
Aries...
|
I don't - I haven't, not yet, but I would like to download some of the live
concerts for Tony that are sometimes broadcast on Radio 3.
So you recommend Net Transport. I thought I could prolly do it via Real
Player
Troy's Human...
|
Naah - I don't think so (I'm sure pmj will correct me if I'm wrong).
pmj...
|
You're right.
Yo ucan't Real Player is expressly designed *not* to allow you to
Save the stuff that it's Playing.
|
Real Player can be used to "Listen again" or "Listen live" to BBC radio. To
pmj...
|
Yep.
The whole idea of the .RA (Real Audio) Format, developed by
RealNetworks.com is that it's a *Streaming* Format & isn't designed
to be "Downlaoded" (unlike MP3 etc)
That is cos it was designed as a primitive form of "Content
Protection", in the early days of Distributing stuff over the
Internet.
|
actually download files you need the URL - e.g. for "Sounds of the 60's" on
Radio 2 it's :-
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio2/soundsixties.ra
pmj...
|
Notice the "rtsp://" Protocol there?
That's "Real Time Streaming Protocol"
|
IE or Firefox won't do it (try it) - they'll just play the programme for
pmj...
|
Yep, they hand the "rtsp://" URL to the RealPlayer Plug-In.
You need independent (3rd Party) things such as Streambox to actually
*Download* .RA Streams.
& they can do it not just in "Real Time", bu tmany times faster than
Real Time!
:-)
|
you.
Net Transport will *download* the file to your HDD and you can *then*
listen to it at your convenience using Real Player - rather than listening
again from the BBC site.
Do have a play and let me know how you get on :-)
pmj...
|
Yep, it's all useful stuff.
You can *also* (again, using 3rd Party stuff) Convert .RA Real Audio
Files to other Formats, such as .WAV &/or MP3.
The Streambox Ripper Utility can do that.
(but it does need to have the Real Networks CoDec (that comes with
RealPlayer) on the Machine to do it)
|
Aries...
|
Okey Dokey - I see it's a trial prog tho. Have you purchased it?
Troy's Human...
|
Yes but only after I'd tried the trial - it does everything.
*Do* have a play with the trial :-)
Aries...
|
I will download it now :)
Troy's Human...
|
And then Try a "New Download" using the URL I gave earlier - just as a
test.
If it works I'll try to explain how to get other BBC radio URLs :-)
|
|
Possibly free progs that do the same thing - I don't know :-)
|

Streambox VCR 1.0 Beta 31 SMF+Turbo
Excellent, it is!!!
It can Download *Multiple* Real Audio (& also .WMA) Streams in Parallel!
:-)
|
|
Even "The Archers" (which I don't actually Listen to, as he
knows) but some people do.
:-)
You can Download stuff (from various Sites - Internet Radio Stations
& dedicated "Podcast type Sites as well).
Sometimes it comes as .MP3, so can be Played Directly & with Formats
such as .RA (Real Audio), you need to Download it & then Convert
it first
