Or something to worry about over the weekend when the helpdesks are
sooooo busy......:-)

From me to the closest server. London. 50 miles.

From me to the furthest US server. Seattle. 4750 miles.

From me to as far away as possible server. Auckland. 11400 miles.
[1] where my upload speed is significantly higher than the download
speed. :-)

'From me to' represents the distance as the flow cries from wherever I
hook into the PlusNet loop. Which is clearly not London but is closer to
London than I am. I have a strong unconfirmed suspicion that Tiscali
figures in that loop somewhere.

Been there and been doing that in the last few days too Ray. I find the New
York server downloads quickest for me. And as you say Auckland is soooo
sloooooww.

Yes, well the point of the exercise was to demonstrate that speed tests
over the internet are, for the most part anyway, a complete and utter
waste of time.
There are too many variables in the way to give an accurate picture of
"Your" situation.
The only reliable speedtests, in terms of "how fast is my connection",
are the one between you and the BT exchange, or whoever supplies the
wholesale internet pipes to your ISP, and your ISP.

speedtest.net is just a pretty diversion from youtube or wherever you
spend your time on the net. :-)

Agreed ray. But if you take the 'best' one for you, and monitor it
regularly you can make sure that your m'c is set up as best you can

datasmog...
You shouldn't be fiddling with your machine. If it works leave it alone.
People who fiddle with PC's have problems.

make your point even more forcefully I think.

datasmog...
heh. I've seen that one before. Even when I had a solid 2 meg
connection, before MaxDSL, that was showing my up and down speeds as
almost the same.
Anyone relying on that site to gauge their internet connection speeds
will be slitting their wrists by now.
I reckon that Numion server is sitting on the end of a dsl line in a
loft somewhere in Amsterdam :-)
[joke by the way, in case someone wastes their time actually checking
that statement]

Did you not try it again? They upgraded it considerably relatively recently
and they now give me a more reasonable reading for download speed
Just tried it withgin last 10 minutes and it gave me:
Download speed 2536.05 Upload speed
369.43
Surfspeed (inside UK) 390.22 Surfspeed
(Worldwide) 250.25
Surfspeed (outside UK) 214.85 Latency
198 ms

Then there's multitudinous graphs to gawp at. LOL
