Stuck a new 1GB stick of crucial RAM in this box, Duff stick (s*d it)
Crucial were excellent, replaced with in a few days.

Jeff Gaines...
Best service of any online retailer anywhere, I had an issue recently (I
half suspect it was my fault) and it was sorted in 48 hours. How other
online suppliers get away with appalling service is beyond me.

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
Yes they are, although it took ever so slightly longer in my case, due to a
lost e-mail (+N again?)

All was fine with the new stick of RAM so decided to run scandisk (bad
move). scandisk found & fixed some errors (yes I'm or at least was still
using WinME). Well the errors found (it seems) was the fact I had a stable
system.
From that point on it all went jellytots up, kept getting error reports
nightmare trying to boot-up.

Any way to cut a long story short I have now put XP Pro on here and am

andon...
Hard lines. Know the feeling. I could throw ME without even having
the monitor on. XP Pro'ing for 16 mth or more and still can't find
half the functions. I just end-up using twice as many Tweak programs.
I do miss having to re-boot hourly though
XP is real solid. Just very bloated.

Thanks for the links Andon, I can see I've a lot of reading is in store :(

struggling to find out where M$ has hidden everything that I was use to.
@x**%%@ computers (BAH)

Jeff Gaines...
You won't regret it, everything is there somewhere! Switching Control

BG hasn't given me much choice :(
I suppose it is but it seems like a big learning curve is in store :(
I was quite happy with what I had, did all I needed

Panel to Classic View may help.

First thing I did :)

Welcome to the real world... Once you've found your way around you'll
love it

Maybe but, but, but I was comfortable the way I was. ;))

Another sign of the ageing produce I'm afraid Terry. :(

JoeH...
Just ask if you need anything Terry - like Jeff says, you'll not reget the
move to XP.

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
Will do, Thanks Joe.

JoeH...
LOL - your time will (might/maybe/perhaps) come! ;-)

=?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?= & $ir Vivor...
No, it won't. I'll not use XP. It's taken Terry days (literally) to
get his PC set up. The colour scheme is garish; the icons are so

Ali...
Other colour schemes are available, mine is mainly silver.

=?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?= & $ir Vivor...
Terry's gone for the classic look now.

titchy they're unrecognisable; the fonts so tiny they're unreadable;

Ali...
Sounds like more adjustments are needed: I need big fonts and icons, and I
have them on my jbex XP machine.

=?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?= & $ir Vivor...
That's been tried - unsuccessfully. Even my dau commented on the fact
that Terry has to lean forward to read some of what's on the monitor
now! I used to be able to read the monitor from the other side of
the dining table - no chance now.

At home I'm sticking with W98.

=?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?= & $ir Vivor...
I've no desire to change to XP and even less now. When the time *does*
come it'll be bye bye Gates.

there are a load of completely unnecessary graphics and hand holding
pop ups; it takes an age to find anything and longer to try to get it
the way the user wants it - *if* they can at all, settings don't hold.
It's a ghastly system. As far as I'm concerned it's totally unusable.

I won't be using Longhorn, that cowboy OS from the cowboy outfit
either. Oops sorry, Vista. That's even worse from the little I've
seen of it.

I'm going over either to a Mac or to Debian. For now ME is fine.

Anita...
I came off ME straight onto XP and Terry I have never regretted it. Like
you I was quite happy staying with ME - but I find XP oh so much easier

Tyke...
I'd be lost without XP now Terry.

It does take a while to get used to but it's worth it :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I get along fine with XP Home Edition on my main pooter and W98 on other
one. Only thing I'd complain about is that the latest ZA free edition isn't
compatibler with W98, but as both pooters hide behind an F/W in my router
I think that having ZA on both pooters is a kind of luxury.

to use :)

Tickettyboo...
LOL I hope you have saved up a LOT if you are going for a mac, they look
lovely, I hear they are ( so far ) a lot less prone to viruses etc than
windows, but boy oh BOY! are they costly. ( that's comparing similar
power, storage, memory etc to a windows machine).
Plus the notebooks mainly come in white ... LOL I really dont fancy that,
now if they did a nice shiny yellow one...:-)
Oh and yes, ray, :-) I have been researching on the web. I may yet buy a
mac notebook thingy, but they 'do' cost an awful lot of pennies.

=?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?= & $ir Vivor...
Not from what I've seen but it's only one option that I'm considering.

I'm not interested in a notebook but I know they are expensive whether
they are Windows or Mac.
