Does anyone know of a site where you can look up old train numbers to
identify which line they were from etc?

Try ukheritagerail

Thanks Shaz... I'd searched the web for but obviously wasn't putting in the right kind
of keywords. Seems a good site but it looks like it isn't as simple as I
hoped. All I have is a photo (of my Great Grandad driving a train) with the
number 865 and Southern on it. Obviously not enough, I'm hoping my parents
might have some more photo's that might show more.

Tree branch and not railway branch line? :-))
~~Linda~~...

Yes... or no... or both... lol, stop it, you're getting me confused again!

Thanks for the speedy reply though :-)

Wow, thankyou! Ooh it's called Sir John Hawkins. web-search is now getting
hammered. My great Grandad drove it... I've been told he also drove Flying
Scotsman and have been in contact with the NRM and waiting to see if they
can confirm it.

Yep, along with photo's and some other info. All sent to Mum and Dad too,
they're amazed.
|
See... Boo is right, I'll have to get an anorak!

Well, he moved to Wimbledon later but previously lived in London, so could
well have worked out of Kings Cross. I'm still digging for further info.
Thanks for all of that Mike.

I think that is very exciting ~Linda~ To think your grandad drove trains so
long ago
~~Linda~~...
|
It's all intriguing Jen. Putting together little bits of information from
here and there... it's surprising what you can find out. We just have the
one photo, rather scratched but you can make out the number and Southern,
so I didn't think that would be enough to find all this!

I'm getting a dab hand at digitally 'repairing' old photos that are
torn and scratched...
see an example of mine here.

Oooh, I haven't found any old relatives looking like those in photo 3!!
:-))

Ooh, you wait.. if Troys Human see's this, he'll have you 'out of the
closet' as a train spotter too, along with being a closet Archers fan :-))
My hubby had similar trains and they're still in the loft, the last time we
got it all out and 'played' we nearly set light to the carpet!
|
(but I have a very similar one to the other photo, with my great
grandmother sat in an almost identical chair and pose)

I've got lots like that but they must have been taken in photographers
studios because many of them were 'ag labs' or 'in service' and
wouldn't have had homes looking like that. ;-)

Late night shopping at the anorak store... I've been searching the web like mad and
now have a fine collection of steam train photographs and information!
