Jeff Gaines...
I don't know if this is accurate but MS seems to be tightening its
licensing conditions for Vista:

Mike Tullett...
I haven't had time to read the following fully, but I think it explains the
changes to licensing better than the Inquirer article.

Jeff Gaines...
Yes it is very clear!

The author argues that the Vista licence is the same as the XP licence i.e

"You may move [Windows XP] to a different Workstation Computer. After the
transfer, you must completely remove [Windows XP] from the former
Workstation Computer."

that's not what MS meant so the Vista licence is a 'clarification'!

Mike Tullett...
And another view on the new policy here:

Jeff Gaines...
Interesting, that expands on the point I made.
This is going to run for a while I think!

Old Grizzly...
I still feel that if *I* buy a licence to use the product then as long
as its only on one machine at a time i should be able to transfer it a
hundred times if thats my wont. I bought the licence not that inanimate
object thats a PC

Jeff Gaines...
The best licence conditions I have seen were with a Borland product. It
said ' this software is like a book, you can do what you like with it as
long as only one person at a time uses it'.

datasmog...
That's very true but Microsoft doesn't trust you. You're a potential
thieving little retch and they're keeping a beady eye on you. Behave or
they will pull the curtains over your Windows.

Old Grizzly...
i can understand Microsoft ........ and the feeling is mutual :)

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
I read it as ' the PC market is bottoming out ' lower sales equals drop in
profits, so must find another way to screw the punters.
M$ won't be happy until they have us renting all their software so they
can
continue to fleece us on a monthly bases.

datasmog...
You already do rent the software. You didn't really think you owned it,
did you?
Just how long do you think it will be before you have to start paying
for all those security patches and software upgrades.

You're not actually all that far off the truth as it goes. Why should
you the home user be any different to the corporate user who is
generally locked into a service contract.

David Love...
A good time to change your operating system then. My preferred system
is RISC OS. I do use a Windows machine, cos my genealogy programme is
of that persuasion! I also use SuSE Linux and love it.

Regards from New Zealand on a warm and wet Monday morning.

Jeff Gaines...
Many thanks for that, which I've kept!
I may see if I can get my VirtualAcornRPC key switched to my new PC.

It's coldish but no sun here in the New Forest today :-)

Old Grizzly...
Hiya David,
welcome to you from a dark and chilly night in Bristol UK where rain is
promised.
I am considering puttin Linux on a machine to see if i can get used to
it ;-)

David Love...
Thanks for the welcome Les. I am a comparative newbie at Linux, too,
but love the freedom it can give. Although, I must admit, that the
sheer volume of programmes available for any one task is rather
overwhelming :-)

Bram...
No better time for to be trying out Linux.

Steve...
Couldn't agree more Bram, if it turns out to be correct my next major
S/W jump will be to Linux, even though I would have probably gone down
the 'Ultimate' route.

Bram...
I said "Try it". No one has to make a Jump. A lot of versions run off a live
CD.
You can surf the net, do emails, instant message, and listen/watch a lot of
online multimedia using Mepis.
You can even watch DVDs if you can find the codec (web-search is your friend
-) )

I wish I had more time to dabble. Bit busy at the moment.

Jeff Gaines...
There's now a suggestion it will apply to all retail versions:

Wonder about MSDN versions, my sub is due soon...

Bram...
MSDN...? Oo..eck..! All the microscoff stuff is beyond me

Been there but haven't bought the shirt yet.

Rabbit...
What's the betting there will be a jbex around on the Internet within days
??? :-)

Jeff Gaines...
I wonder if MS are trying to go too far this time?

Mind you it's in their blood. The first public meeting Bill addressed back
in 198x he accused the computer club members of stealing his software,
it's all he's interested in.

mike.tullett.for.newsgroups...
It seems there has been a big change of heart by MS since we last
discussed this topic. There is some information here:

Mike Tullett...
Yes, good news indeed for those who fiddle with OSs as some of us do. It
will be virtually the same as XP from what I've read.
