I've had shaver sockets put in my bathrooms as part of my re-furb as I
think I'm now lazy enough to use an electric shave instead of wet-shaving.
I did try once before, many years ago, with a shaver that had a foil type
head but it gave a pretty awful shave so I gave up on it.

Firstly you should note that facial skin and bread growth changes
with age. YMMV but a typical male facial hair shaved with a foil at
an early age may be better suited to a rotary shaver later in life,
and vice versa.
I wet shaved for years. First tried a single head rotary in my teens
and ripped chunks of flesh out of my cheeks.
I tried a single foil shaver in my twenties but found that I still
needed to wet shave afterwards so as to feel and look clean.
In my 30's I discovered the joys of Victor Kiam. With the Remington
offer of as good as a blade or money back (post shaver to them and
the receipt and they send full refund including postal costs) I
thought that I would try the twin foil micro-screen. Ace. Never
looked back. About 8 yrs on I was bought a similar Braun, I used it
for a week but then bought a new similar Remington. They had made a
few changes to the Microscreen etc., but it was as good as ever.
Having had the same shaver serviced and parts replaced I had kept it
for years but recently the battery just would not hold a charge so I
went shopping again. Although the shaver was mains/battery it is not
always convenient to shave whilst plugged in :-)
I bought a 3 head Philips rotary. The result was astonishingly better
but it was still not quite right. I had been talking to a colleague
who mentioned that he would never again pay out for a Euro brand name
having been given a Japanese shaver for Xmas. In the past the
Japanese shavers have been known for their clone US/Euro shavers of
appalling quality. Forget that. The Chinese do the naff clones now,
Panasonic and Hitatchi make brilliant shavers now. He has a
Panasonic. I bought an Hitachi. I gave the Philips to my son who
finds it suits him wonderfully.
If you note that some shavers are waterproof, look closely.
Some are only proof against having the cutting head rinsed. The
electrics/battery in the body will not stand immersion in a basin.
Some shavers are basin/shower friendly. Some are even suitable for
wet and dry shaving. My Hitachi does full immersion and wet shaves
too, recharges in 3min for a shingle shave and cost 16 quid via eBay.
When using an electric shaver it will take the beard growth about a
week to adjust to the new shaving routine. Pre-shave oils / gels help
reduce/remove razor burn. The flash shavers that take a tube of gel
inside the handle are a rip off. They are just an expensive way of
selling you oil/gel.

Any suggestions/recommendations from the men (or women) in the group as to
type/make that would give me a decent shave? I have to confess to having

Have a Remington rechargeable and it holds a good charge but it doesnt
cut the hair and pulls the hairs on the throat so i often need to wet
shave that bit. I wouldnt buy another of these. There used to be a
Remington Shop in Bristol where you could go for advice reapirs etc but
like a lot of other companies they closed ...... but you can contact
them online LOL with a razor problem? Hmmph

I use one of these, Jeff -
I use it just like a wet razor with gel and in the shower.
Gives me as good a shave as a blade razor, I think.
I'm sure you'll be able to find it cheaper on the Internet.

Recomendation 1: grow a beard and moustache - then the small amount of
trimming you need to do will not over tax a rechargeable unit.
Recomendation 2: In the past - since 1960 I have always used a rechargeable
electric razor - only had a beard since 1970. Have had Remington,
Phillishave and now both a Hitachi Twinfoil razor and a Remington (battery)
beard/moustache trimmer. Never had any problems.

Hi Jeff -
Maurice bought a Phillips Philishave HQ6879 Mains Rechargeable in October
last year and is very pleased with it, it has 3 round cutters and has a 2
year guarantee This is the 3rd Philishave he has had but has been using an
electric shaver for over 30 years now. He bought one with a foil type head
about 6 months before this latest one and gave it up - it was making his
face sore and he didn't like the result anyway. He too has a greasy skin.
